PIP with Soft Edges

I would like to create something similar to the "Brady Bunch" entry screen (i.e. multiple video tracks PIP'ed together onto one screen. Sizing and placement is easy using the Event Pan/Crop tool.

However, now I want to make the edges less distinct (blur the edges but NOT the main part of the image). This would be similar to the "softness" control in Cinestream. How can I blur the PIP edges without blurring the entire picture?

The Cookie Cutter FX let's you crop with soft edges. The Border FX also has a soft-edge option, if you're using Track Motion to do your PIPs. Either of these could be used, depending on how you have things set up.

Border FX only seems to work on the entire screen instead of the individual video clip. I have resized the video clip using Event Pan/Crop and want the resized video's edges blurred.

Cookie Cutter FX appears like it *can* work, but it is VERY tedious to repeated change the "size" and "location" for each individual clip especially if you start full screen and go to the smaller size and want the edges blurred all of the way down (many keyframes to make sure you don't get "off" along the way).

So, basically, there isn't a simple way to blur the edges of a clip, no matter what size it is, and the blur relate only to that clip?

Put each video clip in a separate track and use track motion to size to the part of the screen you want to fill. Use one other track to put a plain color or gradient background that shows through the space between the other tracks (a framing effect). Then use the border filter to do the soft edges. You can also do a shadow with the track if you'd like.

I usually set up one track then just duplicate it and reset the placement on the duplicate. That way they all come out the same size with the same filters.

Ok, I understand needing the separate tracks for the different pictures/placements. I also understand using another track for a background if a color besides black is desired. However, I don't understand how the border filter can help. I want every picture to be fuzzed around the edges - not just the outside edge of the entire frame. For example, the inside borders of every edge of every picture should fuzz into the background color.

Finally found it! You have to resize using Track Motion instead of Event Pan/Crop. Then the Border FX follows the frame size as I expected.

I missed the "Track Motion" part of your reply. Works great that way!
