The video card and the processor are completely separate items. PIV (Pentium 4) is a processor chip on the motherboard.

Intel hyper-threading technology (which is currently only available on the Pentium 4 3.06Ghz processors) enables multi-threaded software applications to execute threads in parallel. They say it’s like having dual processors and Vegas 4 will take advantage of it. I don’t think Vegas puts demands on your video card as much as is does your processor so if you’re trying to improve performance in Vegas, a faster processor is better than a faster video card.

Going from a PIII500Mhz to a PIV3.06Ghz will blow you away. I went from a PII450Mhz to a PIV1.7Ghz last year and was very impressed with the improved performance. You can get a PIV1.8Ghz PC from Dell for $599. (I paid $2200 a year ago) You can pay up to $400 for a top-of-the-line video card. If I had a PIII500 I would buy the new PC instead. Your mileage may vary. :)

They're just saying you need a faster processor to speed up the application. Dont know what kind of motherboard you have, but it's unlikely it'd support a cpu faster than around 700-900mhz-which wouldn't improve your performance that much, but you would notice an increase in speed. Dont know if you can afford an upgrade to a P1V 3.06, believe the cost of a motherboard, cpu, and RAM would be around $1000.

JohnnyRoy,

You said:

"Intel hyper-threading technology (which is currently only available on the Pentium 4 3.06Ghz processors)"

That is not entirely accurate. While the only Pentium 4 with hyper threading available now may be the 3.06, it is not the only processer where it is available.

Intel Xeon processors have hyperthreading.

Ooops... I stand corrected. ;-)

That'ts true. I upgraded my homebuilt system from a PIII 733 to a P4 3.06 and Rambus memory about a month ago, and it cost a little less than a grand. All my other components are good, so I actually saved over the cheapest Dell available with an Intel 850 chipset.

The price on the P4 3.06 just came down today - saw it for $585, but haven't researched the cheapest price yet.

Actually, if I recall correctly, all P4s (northwoods, at least) have had the hyperthreading hardware built in (even before it was made available on the 3.06). It's just been disabled in the factory. Of course, this makes my point sort of moot, since you can't take advantage of the disabled hyperhtreading features...
