You might want to look around and use a proggie called VGuize, which can "hide" logos and is able to follow the object to hide, even if it moves.

wouldn't it just be easier to keyframe the track motion of a pixelated object on a top track?

Masking part of a video, even a moving target isn't as hard as it sounds, at least not with Vegas Video. The important part is the keyframing if you want to be precise and only mask a small portion of a frame is to set frequent points to keep the mask aligned if the target moves around a lot. There should be several threads, I, others wrote more details on this in the past.
