You need to set your Project Properties the same as your media. Vegas does not do this for you until you tell it to. The reason is that some people may want to simulate the output properties instead.
What kind of camera do you have btw? It might be a matter of needing to remove pulldown. Please give us the camera model, and what frame rate option you used in the camera.
There are many different places where I can set my project properties. And in capture I set my project properties to 24.000 (film), and in preview, I set them to 24.000 (film) . None of these make a difference, except when I force preview to 24.000 (film), the playback is choppy and slow. If there is a configuration of settings that will allow Vegas to capture it at 24p, could you please tell me what it is. If there is not I need to delete this program and get it the hell off my harddrive.
You haven't replied to me about which camera and which frame rate mode you recorded in. You see, if you used these Canon HDV/AVCHD consumer camcorders, most of these only record in PF24, not in true 24p, and they would require pulldown removal to be "seen" as 24p by Vegas instead of 29.97. So, please give me the information I need to help you out here.
And unless you shot *actual FILM*, you should not be setting project properties/exporting settings to 24.00 fps. Most digital 24p cameras record at 23.976 fps, and that's the frame rate you should be using.
Your Project Properties in Vegas are set in the Project Properties dialog.
Search the forums or read the Help and Tutorials to find out how to Match Media Properties in the Project Properties dialog. This is a very specific step, not just a general reference.

Vegas will capture the video as it was recorded. The capture / import function does not alter the original. If you want to change the frame rate, you will do that in the Vegas editing suite and render it accordingly. Project Properties affect the Preview, Render Properties affect the output.
Again, if you will provide the information requested, it will get you a lot closer to a solution. As would providing your media properties. The pulldown question is valid.
I shot it on a Canon XL2 at 24p. In case you are not familiar with the Camera it is the camera that "28 Days Later" and the Guy Richie film "Snatch" staring Brad Pitt as well as many others were shot on.
And yes it was shot at 24p no mistaking it. When I run it through Adobe After Effects the footage is recognized as 24p and not 30i. It is only Vegas where the problem happens.
What is strange to me is if I look in "Media Properties" on the media tab next to "Attributes" it says "720x480x24" yes 24 not 30, but by "Frame Rate" it says 29.970 (NTSC). There is also a button by "Frame Rate" but it is not clickable nor has it ever been in my case.
I found the Folder icon that reads "Match Media" as I hover over it, but when I click on it it takes me to all the media I have ever captured on Vegas and since no of that media was 24p I can't imagine why I would want to match the settings I had on any of it.
I should also mention that I'm using Vegas Platinum 9.0b Build 92 and not Vegas Pro.
Platinum can deal with High Def and Blue-Ray which is nice but if it can't edit in 24p what good is the rest of it. If I am correct about it not being able to edit in 24p I wish that was the thing they made it do rather than PSP, and Blue-Ray.
Hi Eugenia, we already e-mailed each other on your blog. My camera is a Canon XL2 and it was no doubt set to 24p. You set me on the right path. I have not found the answer yet but thank you just the same.

This is very easy to solve! So, when you click the Match Media, a folder opens. NAVIGATE that explorer window to go to your 24p footage, and select one of these 24p clips! Of course and you're supposed to match the properties to one of these 24p files, you just need to navigate to their folder and select one of these 24p clips!!! Then Vegas WILL recognize the files as 24p (23.976 fps) and auto-fill your project properties. I don't understand why you're confused about that window opening to a random folder and not the one you need to. You can always navigate it!
"24" is the color bit depth, has nothing to do with frame rate.
If you will click on one of your media files as outlined above, your Project Properties will match your Media Properties, as if by magic . . .
Ok this is what I did.
1. Click "Project Properties"
2. Click The folder named "Match Media Settings"
3. Select one of my 24p clips and click it.
When I do this it goes back to the "Project Properties" window and under the video tab in the "Template" box it reads "NTSC DV Widescreen (720x480, 29.970 fps)" and in the "Frame Rate" box it still says 29.970 (NTSC)
Adobe sees it as 24p though.
I have a feeling I'm missing some super simple step and when I work it out I'll want to slap myself for waisting 5 days on it. :)
If I click the Templat down arrow no where in there do I see 24p. In frame rate I only see 15.00, 25.00, or 29.970 I can highlite it and type in 24 but not a good thing.
If you matched a 24p file and it STILL auto-completes as 29.97 fps, then this means that the file has pulldown added into it, and Adobe can remove it, while Vegas Platinum can't. I can only suggest you download the Vegas Pro 9 TRIAL version, and try the same. If it still says 29.97, then edit with Premiere. If it says correctly 23.976, then export these clips via Vegas Pro to an intermediate format at 23.976 progressive, and then load them on Platinum.
