Platinum Pro Pack Problem

dbanimal wrote on 12/21/2009, 3:47 PM
Hello all! I am now the proud owner of MS Platinum Pro Pack and so far it's great but am now running into a problem that I hope someone can help me with. Here is my post from another forum.

Here's my question:

I record HD video from my DVR to my laptop using capdvhs via a 1394 connection. It records it as a .ts file. Here's my problem, when I select "Import Media" within Vegas and select the .ts file I get an error saying "An error occurred during the current operation. An Exception has occurred." Vegas then closes.

Click on details of the error window and I see this:

Any idea what's happening? I even used HDTV2MPEG2 to convert it over to mpeg and I have the same problem. I don't have any problems importing files that were originally saved as .mpg. Could it be file size related? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Try the trial version of VideoReDo and see if that solves your problem.
Can you upload a short clip somewhere?
dbanimal wrote on 12/22/2009, 10:29 AM
Thanks for the reply. What will I actually do with VideoReDo? Use it to convert the .ts files to mpg and then import to Vegas? I have nowhere to upload a clip but just so you know I can watch the .ts videos using VLC player and they work just fine.

Correct.
VRD, VLC, and others all use the same libraries so it "should" work with absolutely no quality loss. It is always a good idea to run "Quickstream Fix" in VRD before converting to .mpg

Mediafire is a good upload service or you could just email something smallish to my username at ********.

I would really like to play with one of your files so I can include the info in the tutorial. Thanks!

My .ts files are currently about 800MB each. I could probably record just a couple minutes of any one show and forward that so it's not such a huge file.
musicvid10 wrote on 12/22/2009, 6:20 PM
10-20 seconds would be fine.
dbanimal wrote on 1/5/2010, 8:13 PM
Sorry for the delay, been a busy holiday!! Here's a 10 second clip for you to try out. I tried it being it's a small file size and it still won't import. Thanks again!!

EDIT: I meant AVCHD in place of Mpeg2 below regarding the Main Concept codec.

The MSPPP Main Concept Mpeg2 encoder/decoder does not support HD AFAIK. VP9 does though, that's one of the reasons I upgraded from MSPPP.

I use GB-PVR (free software DVR) to record and it autoconverts, but not sure if it will work for your setup.

It's the Main Concept decoder that's crashing your system. It's a "special edition" i.e. stripped down version.

BUD, It is going to be important for you to check your facts before posting. Your statement above is entirely incorrect.

Let me clarify:

MSPPP's "Main Concept" AVCHD encoder does not support HD. It looks like the crash is coming from a MC decoder, so there must be some connection. AVCHD is common in a .TS file, therefore.....

I DID make a typo above, but I edited it now.

My thinking is that since MSPPP is not giving an "unsupported" type error, and it's assigning the decoding to a .dll, and that .dll is crashing, the only other explanation is a conflict with a Windows driver.

What??

Let me clarify:
-- AVCHD Both AVC and MPEG-2 MainConcept encoders in VMSP support HD. I have no idea where you are going with this, because . . .
-- The OP's question has absolutely nothing to do with AVCHD or encoding. Period. It pertains to an error opening an MPEG-2 transport stream. Changing your post after the fact only made the mistakes worse.

You see, I actually downloaded the clip, determined the attributes, and ran some tests, making speculation unnecessary. That's kind of how we do it around here.

See post below.

dbanimal,

OK, now here are the facts (Once again, a clip is worth a thousand words):

1) It throws an exception in Vegas Pro 8.0c too. It's because these versions of Vegas do not recognize MPEG-2 transport streams with AC-3 audio. (Hopefully this will get fixed in VMSP soon).
2) You can remux your file with mp2 (MPEG-1, Layer II) audio in VideoReDo and it opens audio and video without an error in Vegas. You can use either a .ts or .mpg wrapper. The same works in AviDemux, or Super (both free), and achieve the same result. Of course it will be stereo.
3) If you actually have 5.1 surround audio in your .ts that you wish to preserve, you can transcode the audio directly as a separate 6-channel PCM file in AviDeMux and use that in Vegas or to replace the audio in DVDA.

That all being said, again, if you are making stereo DVDs from your set-top .ts files, do your editing and auto commercial removal directly in VideoReDo and open the muxed file directly in DVD Architect. I tried it and it works. The easiest approach I know of.

Here's how it came out. Note that the video has not been touched. (link good for seven days)

Normally Vegas leaves the audio stream but still brings in the video in a case where the audio cannot be decoded, so I didn't go down this path, but this is a unique case where Sony seems to have specifically engineered this exception, and for understandable reasons.

If I may again edit myself, I meant the MC AVC codec in MSPPP9 does not support AVCHD.

They are one and the same. No further comment.
dbanimal wrote on 1/6/2010, 2:10 PM
So if I understand you correctly, the only problem is with the AC3 audio? What about 9 Pro, same problem there?

Well thanks for the valuable information, I will give it all a try!! Hopefully Sony sees this and creates a fix for it (crosses fingers).

musicvid10 wrote on 1/6/2010, 6:51 PM
That is correct. The fix is quick and simple, though.
I don't know about Vegas Pro 9, so that's why I didn't mention it (we try not to generalize our responses here).
dbanimal wrote on 1/6/2010, 7:15 PM
What did you do to the clip to make it work in MSPPP? It loaded fine but I noticed it doesn't have sound. I just wanted to make sure you made it so it would load but without audio, otherwise I'm puzzled. Thanks again by the way and thanks for the patience, I'm new to this world of video editing (well HD anyway).
musicvid10 wrote on 1/6/2010, 7:25 PM
Are you sure my clip doesn't have sound? Your audio doesn't show much of a waveform, but it plays.

Right-click on the audio track, then Switches->Normalize. Does that look better to you?

dbanimal wrote on 1/6/2010, 8:42 PM
My sincerest apologies, I didn't have my sound hooked up (which I knew) and just made an assumption because I didn't see a waveform (note to self, never make assumptions!!). Thanks again for all your help, it's very much appreciated!!
musicvid10 wrote on 1/6/2010, 8:45 PM
Good, glad we got that cleared up!

Now, as to how to create a file that will open in Vegas, it is dirt simple.

Whether you choose to use the VideoReDo trial, or AVIDemux, the basics are the same.

Don't touch the video, choose MPEG audio, and remux. I assure you, it is that simple!

Don't be afraid to experiment, don't be afraid to make mistakes, and . . .

Good luck!

I am having the exact same problem. I had files on a portable hard drive and put on hard drive, that didn't work. I'm using vista and video files are .mp4. It would crash every time I tried to import more than one file and often times more. Now, I can't even get the saved file I was working on to open. PLEASE, I don't understand most of the other threads. Tell me in laymans terms what I need to do. Thanks!
musicvid10 wrote on 1/6/2010, 9:58 PM
This is NOT the "exact same problem."

Please start a new thread and post your problem in detail. Thanks.
dbanimal wrote on 1/7/2010, 8:32 PM
Question, I tried using AVIdemux and when I open a file it says "This appears to be MPEG, do you want to index?" I've been saying yes. And when you said to only change the audio to mpeg and leave the video alone, which mpeg am I supposed to use? There's multiple MP selections available and each one I have tried so far results in an error when trying to save "incorrect amount of channels" or something along those lines. Do you have a good tutorial on how to do this? Thanks.
musicvid10 wrote on 1/7/2010, 8:47 PM
Now that I look closer at the file I did in AVIDemux, I can see a sync problem. Probably not the best solution.

Go with my first suggestion, which is VideoReDo. It really is much better suited for this type of work. I will help you with the settings, time permitting.
dbanimal wrote on 1/8/2010, 8:07 AM
I use capdvhs to record from my DVR and I noticed last night that there is a demux tab within capdvhs. I might give that a try. Otherwise, is VideoReDo Plus worth purchasing? I know I will have tons of HD that will need editing in the future (unless Sony fixes this problem in MSPPP).
