Play not working on timeline

Help this problem just started and is not project specific. If I select play or space bar the video does not play through the timeline or at all. I have tried resetting all preferences but hat did not help. It worked just fine an hour ago then all of a sudden Play does not work. I can see it switches the playback toggle so it acknowledges I am hitting play.

In the Trimmer pane, right-click and Uncheck "Show video in Preview"

If that doesn't do it, Deselect the Split-Screen button on the Preview pane.

Also what kind of camcorder is your video coming from? Have you added a lot of effects or are you using several video tracks?

It could be that you've just overwhelmed your computer hardware and you'll need to pre-render a portion or all of your timeline.

(It also could be a lack of free, defragmented space on your C drive. Do you have at least 30 gigabytes of free, defragmented space?)

As a matter of interest, Steve, how do you create defragmented space?

Cheers

You run a defragmenter.

There's one included with Windows as well as a number of free defragmenters available online from companies like iobit.com.

As a matter of fact, iobit has a terrific little free program called Advanced System Care that not only defragments but also tunes up your registry and clears off spyware and junk files. http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html

I recommend it in my books, and I run it once a week. It keeps my computer running better than new!

Please fill out your system specs in your user profile.

What audio hardware are you using?

Does the playback cursor move?

Do you hear audio?

If you start a new project with a single audio file on the time line, does it play?

Can you preview audio/video from Vegas' explorer?

You run a defragmenter.

That will defragment the files but not the free space.

Auslogics defragmenter has an option called Defrag & Optimise that does shift the files to provide contiguous free space - which I presume is what you're referring to.
