Play on set top but not on PC?

OK, so I finally got everything going and I've finished my first chaptered project.

It burned the DVD fine and I rushed downstairs to make sure it plays on the set top DVD player. WONDERFUL! Crystal clear and all my menus. But it won't play back on my laptop or PC. The PC that burned the thing in the first place!

Is this common or am I doing something worng?

Actually it is fairly common, even if there's nothing wrong with the DVD.

Because of it I've installed several different players on my various PC's. If one don't work, usually another will.

Have you tried playing it with Power DVD? It frequently plays DVD's that Microsoft's Media player stumbles on. Also if you have a pretty old version of Media Player it won't play MPEG-2 at all because of some old licensing issues.

Nope. The machines (PC and laptop), won't even READ the disk. So it's not the players or a codec thing. It's as if they have been finalised in a strange way so that the computers can't read them at all.

How big is your project? Recently I and some others ran into issues with projects very close to the 4.7 limit where cutting back just little fixed it. For me it was reversed. Played OK on PC, wouldn't play on set top.

Nope. Tried even small projects with the same result. I'm going to try them on some other set top machines tomorrow and try different disks as well. :(

I have same problem with any disk that has a menu. A straight play through disk has no issues.

If you have a free slot and your IRQs aren't maxed out or in danger of conflicting, buy a Sigma Designs Hollywood Plus DVD decoder card for $40 and install it. It plays flawlessly unlike software based players. ATI has for many years included hardware decoding in their video cards. They use Cinemaster. It plays just as well even on a cheap and slow machine.
