Playback Acceleration For Video. How! What!

Arnar wrote on 1/26/2001, 10:27 AM
I need some info on what card i can use to accelerate
PLAYBACK of Video in vegas Video!
Im not interested in the capture functions as i am using a
Matrox RT200 Card for that purpose.
So basically what i am looking for is a card which
accelarates the video PLAYBACK so i can view it in realtime
on an external monitor.

If such a card does not exist then what is the best format
for the video in order to get smooth playback?

I am not using Vegas Video for Video editing as much as
sound editing so the files i am working with are usually
only one video stream and a lot of audio tracks!

Question!

Does Sonic Foundry plan to support the Matrox RT 2000 card??

Basially what i am trying to understand is how are you
supposed to work with video in Vegas "VIDEO"!?!?

I realize that the capturing functions are cool as well as
the video editing itself .....but how are you supposed to
see what you are doing!?!

What i use Vegas for is :
I make all my music with a combination of Acid/Soundforge/
and then i take the loops and sounds i have made and
compile and mix the actual song in Vegas and i just love
this combination for that and then i even cut the video
while i am making the soundtrack which is an awesome
funtion that i have not been able to do in any other
program!!!!! BUT what frustrates me is the fact that i want
to see the video on an external JVC screen I have and I
dont understand how i am supposed to do that!?

So....what i need to know is this:
Is there anybody out there that is doing the same thing
with results!?

Is there anybody at Sonicfoundry that can tell me how i can
do this and i am not talking about connecting via firewire
to a dv camera to a screen as that does not accelerate the
playback as well as the fact that i cant always have the
camera plugged in when i am working....Please tell me how i
can sort this out as i will buy the stuff needed its just
that I have to get this working or i will have to start
using Premiere and i would just hate that!

Thanks

Arnar

If you are talking about accelerated fx, then no Vegas does
not do this with other video cards. For external monitor
w/o using a camera, we have been using the Sony DVMCA2
Media converter with great success. At $300-ish, its a
pretty good deal.

If your project, and your video, are DV, you can run the
video out to an external monitor via 1394 & DVMCDA2- this
the cheapest, coolest, most versatile box we've seen.

Ok ...that sounds good, but i am mostly doing ads destined
for broadcast and until now we have been making avi
versions of the ads so i can run them and do the sound
design.
You mentioned that if my project is DV (does that mean if
its an avi i cant run it out the firewire?)then i can run
it to the monitor, but does that lessen the strain on the
computer so i can watch the video without dropping frames
all over the place?
In other words will it run more smoothly then in the
preview window in VV?

Basically what i am trying to achieve is this:

I want to be able to see the video that i am working on
(sounddesign) on a screen without it being terribly slow.
I would like to be able to use other formats like AVI or QT
if possible , but i wouldnt mind it if i cn convert it to
DV format as long as i get it running smoothly.

Bottomline!

You see i use this prog mostly for sound fx and stuff and i
need it to stop dropping frames and to start running
smoothly on an external screen!

(I will buy this box if you can tell me that it will run
the video better as in mybe it takes the strain of the
puter when its sending via Firewire rather then displaying
on screen!?!?!)

BTW: I love your products its just that its so close to be
one of the coolest programs around!......Almost there!
Thanks
Arnar

If you have avi DV footage, captured with our Video Cature
tool, and play the footage back untouched in a DV projct,
you'll be able to do soundesign to a broadcast-quality,
29.97fps video track. (25 if Pal).

Ok i have done that by now i hooked up my camera a Canon
Xl1 via firewire and from there to my monitor via S-video
and i can see the footage just fine but it doesnt sync!!
As in there seems to be a major latency at least 500ms!
Is there something i am doing wrong or is this just a fact ?
Obviously it would be quite useless for sounddesign if the
latency is a fact !? so that seems quite unlikely , so i
must be doing something wrong, any ideas?

Just to clarify ....
I captured some footage w/audio and when i play it back the
audio sync´s in the preview window but not when I play it
on the monitor.
And it seems to be about 500-600 ms.

You guys give very prompt answers most of the time and i
hope that will be the case now as i am losing out on a
deadline ( Aren´t we all:)

Thanks
Arnar

We'll be releasing an update (2.0c) in the near future that
will give you control over the video hardware latency.
This update will probably be released by mid-Feb, (but I
refuse to promise!).

I see......I hope you guys realize that this renders the
external monitor function utterly useless!

Even if you are only working on the video and not the sound
then this latency between the sound and picture is
completely unacceptable.

Dont get me wrong,I do realize that getting all of this to
work with all the different hardware thats available is a
pretty tough task but i do think that there should be at
least one combination of video capture/playback cards that
should work and stay in rocksolid sync!

Mostly i am frustrated by the fact that i love the program
for its audio functions and the way it integrates with
Soundforge, but I am afraid that i will have a hard time
explaining to my boss why I insisted on buying this program.
A program which now has taken me at least two days to
troubleshoot and the final conclusion is that it cannot
stay in sync, hence the fact that i cannot use it!!!

I am pretty sure that i would have bought the program
anyways just for the audio functions but i just think its
wrong to sell the program saying that it will do things
that it will not do, and thats when it starts to cost money
in downtime.
I dont know, maybe i was just plain wrong to assume that it
could be used in a pro environment?

Regarding an update .....I cannot tell my clients that
their projects will maybe be done by mid february (But i
refuse to promise!)

Sorry about the ranting but I am very disappointed.
