Playback bug

Jessariah67 wrote on 11/20/2009, 2:16 PM
This is really starting to get annoying. At times (no rhyme or reason) Vegas just doesn't playback. Doesn't matter which version (7 or 8), there are time thaI hit play, it goes to a rate of 1.0, but it doesn't play. I can move the cursor around and do anything else, but it won't playback. Then, for no apparent reason, it will again.

It's almost like it's waiting for something to happen in the background. Also, it happens to all instances I have opened at the time.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance.

You're hard drive could be spinning up. After a while Windows tells your hard drives to spin down to conserve power and your hard drives. After inactivity it takes just a few seconds to get them back up.

I would recommend changing these settings under your power options just to test and see if that is the culprit. If it is, make the changes necessary to correct for this. If it isn't, try placing your media (or some test footage) on another drive and see if you get the same results.

Also check if a virus scanner is enabled.

A bug is normally Global. If there were many reports of this, and there isn't (?), then that would be a bug. But it could be described as a local issue to your specific of pc configuration IF all the other parts are within the Vegas specification. It is NOT a bug if say your Enter key, on your keyboard is faulty, OR you have some other bit of the setup that is impaired.

My only plea here is that we have to be very careful in possibly misdirecting people's input here?

When I come across an "issue" I have learnt to post here a "Can somebody please try and repro this?" - But I AM guessing that you kinda realised that if this WAS the experience of the Forum here, then there would be a clamouring of an early release - viz the missing Text issue on VP9a.

I had a "local" issue, not dissimilar to yours - a sticking Ctrl key! Gave the keyboard a few healthy thwacks, upside down and dislodged several years of built up crud, and a krugerrand ( that was a joke . . the "crud" I mean!). Anyway, something very simple was causing all types of nonsense.

I do hope we find and answer, but once all "other" avenues have been travelled, then it is off to SONY.

My system has just had a bout of the flu or something.
At random times when I use the Shuttle to spool along the T/L I get a nasty error message from Windows saying Vegas 8.0 has to be shutdown. I've tried several restarts of V8 and the PC and for the minute at least the problem seems to have gone away.
I doubt it's anything Vegas specific. What is really annoying is the write ahead cache in Windoz disk system. Even though I've been regularly saving the project with incremental version numbers the latest edits get lost as the save must still be in the cache and Windoz is not flushing that because of the crash. Most annoying as much of the time I'm simply looking for a clip to use so I loose where I'm at as well as the edits.
Time to sharpen a pencil if it comes back again.

I don't think it's a power issue, as I've got hardrive shut down set to "never."

I'll see if turning off the virus software helps next time it happens.

Thanks for the input.

If you are playing the video from an external USB or Firewire drive, I have seen this exact same problem, although only on my older computer. All communication with the external drive would cease for 10-15 seconds. When it came back, everything would be normal again for awhile and then, bang, it would happen again.

I've never been able to fix it. I'm pretty sure it is more a Windows problem than a Vegas problem, and the fix might involve using a different external enclosure, updating USB or 1394 drivers, using a different cable, or something along those lines.

It wasn't anti-virus or hard drive spin down.

It's some glitch with Sony, cuz when it's occuring, I can open up another version of Vegas or Sound Forge or Acid and none of them play.

You also tried just minimizing and again maximizing the Vegas window?

No. I'll try that. Thanks for the tip.
