Playback continues past project end

I have a project that is 8 seconds long. When I play it, the playback cursor continues past the project and goes to the 2-minute mark before stopping. I have verified that the project doesn't contain anything that extends past the 8-second mark by clicking the Go To End >| Button.

Though a render comes out okay, this continued playback past the project end is a bit annoying during editing because highlighting a region on the project while playback is still running will create a loop playback. Is there a setting that will make project playback stop at the end of the project?

Not that i know of. Personally i've never found this annoying. Puzzling, yes, but not annoying. On the other hand, since Vegas obviously knows where the end of the project is, i can't imagine why it behaves this way. True, there are some audio effects such as reverb that can continue the signal past the end of the last event. However, the duration can be calculated and known. This duration is usually no more than several seconds and certainly not 2 minutes.

Maybe all those who do find this annoying should submit a project suggestion and ask for playback to stop at the end of the project.

I swear that my version of VMS (6) used to have a very short overrun during playback, past the end of the end of the project, and then would snap back to the end. I'm talking an overrun of maybe 10 seconds or so.

Now it exactly as the original poster mentioned. I wonder what changed?

I've found that later versions of Vegas tend to have shorter overruns than earlier versions. I remember Video Factory 2 would keep playing several minutes past the last event. I'm now on Vegas Pro 8 and the overrun is about 5 seconds.

Interestingly, I literally just found that if I work with audio envelopes, then go back and play my project, the overrun is only a few seconds long. So go figure...I don't know if it will stay that short, but at least I know what to do if it goes back to a long overrun.

It is a puzzle. Since Vegas knows when to stop rendering, it makes you wonder why it doesn't use the same information to know when to stop playing.

Even more interesting is sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't! I consider a couple of seconds overrun knowing when to stop...
