Playback hesitation in Vegas 4

I've finally installed Vegas 4d (been using Vegas 3 since it came out and waiting for ver. 4 to get debugged). Everything seems great except: I've got a 22 track session running (my first serious mulittrack session with Vegas 4) and when I hit the space bar or the play button, there's an irritating hesitation before playback begins. I'm routing the tracks to 8 busses (my usual setup) playing back through a Layla 24 (WDM drivers) into an analog console. There are no plugins in the session yet. Even muting some of the tracks doesn't impove the hesitation much - a little but not enough to feel like its operating properly. Since I never recalled this happening with Vegas 3, to compare it, I opened a new Vegas 3 session with the same routing and bussing and imported all the tracks. No hesitation in Vegas 3. I looked around for some buffer settings or other adjustments that may be associated with this but can't seem to find a remedy. Anyone else experienced this??

Thanks,

drbam

I've definitely determined that the hesitation is related to how many tracks are in the session. However, 22 trks without any plugins should NOT cause this degree of hesitation with my system. I could understand it with 48 or more but 22 seems pretty ridiculous. It almost feels like waiting for a blackface ADAT to start! (well maybe not quite THAT bad). Anyway, again the same session in Vegas 3 does not cause this behavior. In fact I increased the Vegas 3 session to 28 trks with only minor hesitation at start of playback (which feels normal). I'd really like to know if this is happening with anyone else.
