Playback of rendered m2ts files

jrdiandrea wrote on 9/19/2010, 8:18 AM
I am in process of editing/rendering alot of AVCHD footage shot at HD 1080-60i (1920x1080, 29.970 fps). The pixel format in Project Properties is 8bit, I have the settings set to highest or best & I'm rendering to SONY AVC, using the 1920 x 1080-60i 5.1 surround. I want to preserve the nhighest possible quality I can so that when playing thru my projection system I am seeing the best image possible.

The problem is, I can't seem to find a way to play back these rendered files with out the AV eventually going out of sync...it's as if the player can't keep up. It happens to all files after the first minute or 2. I have used windows player and VLC and same experience. Any suggestions?!

Thx

If your computer lacks horse power, try KMplayer with CoreAVC decoder. KMplayer is free, but CoreAVC has a modest charge.

You could also try Media Player Classic. I think there are two versions of it.

Full AVCHD is a pretty poor delivery format on most PCs, because of the high CPU overhead.

A good solution, and one that I use often, is to render to AVC 720p (sometimes called "AVCHD Lite." Chances are you won't notice the difference on your monitor, except for the smooth playback.

Save the 1080 for Blu-Ray, except you'll want to render as 30i (29.97). How to do this is covered in other threads.

As mentioned, it could be a PC horsepower issue, but if not, try running the rendered .m2ts file through tsmuxer as described here:

having looked at your sys specs, i would suspect there's a problem elsewhere.... you have more than enough grunt there to playback RENDERED files.

Try using the Main Concept codec.

I really appreciate everyones response. This has been a very frustrating thing to figure out.

There are quite a few options suggested to me. i will begin testing to see if a solution is among them.

I do believe my notebook has enough power...at least that's what my tech guy said. It has one of the fastest processors I could buy. But if it doesn't I want to find out.

I have a high end 1080p projection system in my home theater. I could burn it to bluray I guess, but I would rather be able to play the digital fileas I am creating and I'd like to be able to play them back at the highest possible resolution.

I'll let you know how I make out...it may be till the weekend till i can get to try most everything.

The other thing that was not mentioned is you need to disable all of your CPU-eating display enhancements, sidebar, and unneeded background apps. That alone can make quite a difference.

It's natural to think that the highest bitrate and resolution is somehow "best" for computer delivery and playback. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Unless you have a laptop or monitor that is larger than 40" diagonal (which I doubt), the best playback is going to be the one that is the smoothest. Again, I suggest you try 1280x720 30p before prejudging the results based on numbers.

Wow. My early tests indicate the Muxer freeware you suggested is working! I will try it this evening on a larger scale via my home theater but it lookos good at this point.

I have been looking for a solution for a year. I have been told so many different things only because no one had any idea what the problem was. People were stumped!! I posted on num erous sites, had people at Sony hardware AND software working on it numerous times just to mention a few. As you said, it is VERY FAST...I don't know what it does but it works!!!

Thank you very much.

Glad to help. I see from your profile that you are using Windows 7 64-bit. I have seen several other reports in various forums of people having this problem and all of them are using Windows 7 64-bit. That is what I use and also have this problem.

It may be coincidence, but it makes me wonder whether the problem is isolated to Win 7 64 bit users.

That's an interesting observation. It certainly could be an issue. You know, the other thjing I noticed, in the window in states "H.264 stream does not contain fps field. Muxing fps=29.97". I wonder if the frames are just a bit under or over exactly what they should be & this corrects it. Hey, I do not understand much under the hood. Hence alot of my problems. But I new I couldn'y be the only who had the problem...I just couldn't find anyone else who did!!

Thx again.

I'm "Muxing" as I write!!! I'll be doing it for quite a while. Lots of files...but at least i will now be able to watch them as they should be seem with out the family laughing at all of this hi end equipment not work properly!!
