Playback Only Loops First 5 Frames

dved wrote on 10/9/2002, 11:54 AM
I have installed VV 3.0 on my Windows 2000 machine and I cannot get clips to play back within Vegas Video. If I drop a clip on the timeline and press the play button or the play from beginning button, it will play up to the 5th frame and then loop back to the 1st frame. So basicaly, the play back just looks like a still image with about a half of second of motion. It does this every time I try to play back the timeline. Has anyone ever seen this before?

It sounds like you have the "Loop" feature enabled. (Is there a blue bracket over the event?

Thanks for your reply, but it didn't solve my problem. The loop feature was in fact enabled, but after turning it off, the problem still exist. I also just noticed that if I click on any of the events, bringing the "scroller" to where my pointer clicked on the timeline and press play, it will play the next 5 frames in the same looped fashion. This is driving me nuts. It was like this since I installed it yesterday and I did not turn on any of these features. Does the loop feature default to enabled?

I have a feeling that this is something to do with your audio system. Vegas opens uses the audio when you press play, even when there is only a video stream.

Try the following:

1) in Vegas, go to the 'Options' menu and choose 'Prefernces'
2) Go to the audio tab
3) in the Audio Device type you should have two choices - Micrsoft Sound Mapper and WDM driver. Choose the oposite of the currently selected driver.
4) Click 'OK' to confirm the changes.
5) try playing a file in Vegas.

Hopes this helps.

Another thing to do is press play and just let Vegas 'stutter' until you get an error message, which might tell you what the conflict is. Do you have any other audio apps open at the same time, or system sounds?

Dang ibliss, I thought you solved my problem, but still no mojo. While doing what you suggested, I also moved the playback buffering (seconds) slide control to the maximum of 1 second. This enabled the clip to roll to about the 12th frame instead of the 5th.

This is a Windows 2K machine with an onboard sound card.

You could try putting just an audio file onto the timeline and seeing if that will play - if it doesn't then it's definitely sound card related. Otherwise might it be a dodgy video file?? Don't really know if that would stop playback.

Can you get updated drivers for the onboard sound?

You can also test for a sound card issue by disabling the sound card hardware in the Windows device manager. Vegas will still open and should playback correctly (obviously with no sound ;).

It would also be a good idea to turn of all Windows systems sounds (use the Sounds control panel).

In fact the fact that changing the audio buffer lets you playback a longer loop suggests it definitely is the on board sound.

Hmmm.... keep trying!

You guys are great! An upgrade to my audio device driver has solved the problem. I would have never guessed it either! Thanks so very much for your help and happy editing.
