Played with the Canon XF350. MXF files - help!

Grazie wrote on 5/25/2010, 11:41 PM
OK, had a 3 hour run on the Canon 350XF and have gotten back a DVD platter of folders within which I have these MXF files. I can get the files<>media into Vegas individually - PITA! - but is there a way, not having the camera with me, to have this done another way?

Oh yes, the camera is a real, tangible peep into the future . . and the output is dreamy. Recordable 422 on standardized Flash Cards? Who'd have thought . . . .

Convergent Design has been writing 422 on flash cards for 2 years. RED has been writing 444 on flashcards longer than that.... and at 4K instead of 1080.

That said, what do you mean you had to get the files into Vegas individually. Couldn't you drag and drop them in? If the folder structure mirrors that of the EX1/EX3, then you should have gotten the top level BPAV folder from the Canon. If it doesn't follow that folder structure, then I guess we'll have to wait and see how SCS implements importing the files.

Vegas 8 needed the Sony Clipbrowser tool to re-wrap the files so they could be imported. However, Vegas 9 imports the native clips just fine.

Can't you drag all the files in one go into the Project Media?

From there you may have to wait a while Vegas does it's machinations like it does with the files from the XDCAM EX cameras but after a coffee or two you should be good to go.

I'd also copy the files from the DVD onto your hard drive first.

Bob.

Perrone, as always, I defer to your depth and width of knowledge on these matters. But I should have been more specific, this IS a £7k camera. The Convergent Design is that a camera? Or a method to then use a box to write to Flash cards? This is just a camera with it all this stuff in place already. Marvellous!

That said and moving on . . .

Well, files/folders were copied over from the Card. In the Top-Level of this batch is a thing called a INDEX.MIF - ? Does that help? I don't see a BPAV?

Bob, what I have is like 30 folders containing 131 files. And yes, I tried to work form the DVD (fool!) but I had then decided to copy over to a HD.

It would be interesting to find out if there is a correct/expected way to do this? - If I've made a mistake I'll be the first to admit it.

Guys, as always, thank you.

Yes, the convergent design box is an add-on to the camera, not a built in. That said, the Canon restrict you to 50 Mbps long-GOP, while the convergent design allows for up to 280Mbps intra, or something like 180Mbps long-GOP. It's an amazing piece of hardware, but does mean you have something else to mount.

It doesn't sound like there is any structured way to bring in the files. That's too bad. There really isn't for the EX1/EX3 files either. Vegas needs something like Avid's AMA to make this process much cleaner.

OK . . got it.

So, we want a better way to get this stuff in? . . . .

TAXI!

I use Ultimate S Pro, so i just use the import media bins from folder function, and point to the root folder ( at least with EX-1 files that are already dumped from the cam ). It's a 1 click solution to have all the clips imported no matter how messy the folders are , (and each one is in its own bin which is handy as the project gets really large)

UltimateSPro did place all the MXF files in "All Media", which is a good thing. Now having 29 (?) separate BIN folders each with a separate MXF file. How can I have more control of these same MXF Folders that have appeared as separate Bins? How do I work with that?

But yes, I DO have all the Media in All Media.

well, I like to leave them there for when the project gets large, and I just want to look at the clips one at a time, but you can just delete the bins can't you? and then make the bins as you want them?

How about do Windows Search of MXFs files, then, drag those MXFs search results to Vegas?

Can it help?

What's impressive is that Canon is producing 422 on flash cards for less than $7K. The Red may be an impressive and expensive camera.

Rockie? It's a great camera and has the science to back up their claims too. Everything was in the places I have come to learn having used Canon cameras B4. Seeing the natural colour detail from the 422 is dreamy. Would/could this be my entree into higher-end HD?

Canon have shaved-off 2 points on the zoom (yes, depends on where you start!) and there isn't an option to X-change lenses. It is a 1/3 3xCMOS chip set which I'll leave the tech-heads to puzzle over viz the other 1/2 or 2/3 chippers around. Can I see a X3-er dumping their kit for this? Not really. Maybe a person who was considering to go X3 would really want to kick the tyres on it down at their local store - sure.

Pros - All the "Come-and-get-me" 422<>50mbsec; solid state capture to non-prop cards; dreamy histos, nice.

Cons - Over sized mic clamp (why?); No lens protector; Couldn't get my Frottie LANC to shake hands with the XF350 PUSH focus - but this was the same on the XHs too.

Do I think (and that IS a "not know"!) SONY will have something with X-Change lenses in their traps? 4 Shore!

Grazie - you might be interested in reading this posting from Alister Chapman - it appears the BBC has approved the Canon X300/305 for indie production only.

The camera won't be released for several months yet. Few will be able to give any kind of reasonable review.

Cliff thanks for the link. Good reading. Interesting comments on 1/3" Canon <>1/2" SONY chipset.
