Please, a few more FAT32 basics?

Searched all the forums and got some good info on fat32 limits, .avi seemless to tape (which I have to try soon). Am running a 80 gb hard drive about half full and my first 30 minute .avi render in VV3.0c created the two files I expected. What I did not expect is that I cannot copy or move them on my hard drive. Win message "Cannot move or replace ... file. The parameter is incorrect." So, I presumed this "pointer" vv uses somehow does not allow copying the files to another drive, etc. BUT, I have a 2.8 gig .avi file rendered and it will also not be moved or copied. At this point I do not know why or what the magic size is?? The only way I get the files where I want them is to render them again to that location. At this point I am presuming I must trial and error renders smaller and smaller until I find a size that will move, or is there some basic setting I have missed that protects the files?

Is Windows or Vegas giving you the error message?

It sounds more like a file sharing error. Windows don't let you move or change a file that another application has open. Have you tried saving your project file in Vegas, then closing down Vegas and then using Windows Explorer to move the file where you want?

While pretty old, the following link gives some basic heads-up on FAT 32

I shall check the link. Vegas is shut down completely and the two files sit in a folder by themselves where I rendered them to. It is a windows error message.

Although you can create a single file on a FAT32 drive up to 4 gig, Windows Explorer in Win98 will not move or copy a file larger than 2 gig. You must open a DOS window and use the command-line "copy", "xcopy32" or "move" commands.

Thanks. Being an old DOS dud, yep dud, I did not even think of trying that. It worked but boy, makes you realize the importance of knowing where you are going to put your files in the first place. At least if I must, now I can move them around. Thanks again, and I appreciate all you experts out there on this forum.

This Win98 2-gig Windows Explorer limit is just one more reason to go to Win2k or WinXP. Glad I could help.

On my win98se system the "move" command does not work with files larger than 2GB, but the "copy" command does work. I have tried in both a dos window and after a fresh boot into dos. It is MUCH faster in a dos window.
