Please fix firewire issues Sonic Foundry!

Hello, I really enjoy using VV3 - it is an excellent product. However there is one issue that Sonic Foundry never resolved - its engine inefficiency regarding firewire drives. If I transfer video plus the audio into the timeline, then play it back, sometimes it will freeze and loop like crazy. This problem has been reported before. When playing back on the local hard drive, it is flawless.

I hope you can please fix this because otherwise it's very frustrating to use the product. I'm trying to watch my video production and then all of a sudden boom it freezes on me. I spent a lot of money on my firewire drive and I know this is a VV3 issue. Otherwise cheers to an excellent program. asafb

This issue was just discussed and SoFo continues to chase it:

FWIW, I use an external 1394 drive with zero problems, so I wouldn't be so quick to blame SoFo. They may find a solution even if it not their fault, provided they get helpful feedback from the users.

It's not just a SOFO issue. This is an issue with Premiere, Ulead, and other apps. Also is an issue with Photoshop opening large psd files from a 1394 drive. Do a search on the web for 1394 issues, this is fairly common with some computers/busses/chipsets.

Dunno about that. Premiere 6 never freezes up on me, despite it's much better ability to shuttle up to 7X speed. But even at 2X VV3 can't go more than a few minutes without a freeze.

The timeouts mentioned above were occuring every minute or so on my brand new ADS firewire drive. Yesterday I did a brain transplant and plunked the HD into a USB-2 box. So far everything is working great on playback, with the same files coming from the same HD. Next I will do some rendering tests and report back.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but I have 2-60 gig 5400 IDE drives housed in Pyro firewire enclosures. They are daisy-chained together, and from one of them I run my firewire cable to the DV camera. Have had no problems at all with capturing, editing, rendering or playback. My computer is an AMD AthlonXP 1800, 1gig of DDR 2700 RAM, Asus AV733 Raid motherboard, Geforce GTS Pro 64 video card.

jsut curious... which firewire adapter are you using?

On my first system (an Athlon 1.33) I used the Pyro card that came with the external kit. That system worked great too. On the system listed in my post, I use the firewire that came with the Asus board. It's a separate item that attaches to a header on the motherboard.
