Yep, sounds like you need Spot's new book. It not only goes through all of this stuff, step by step, it also comes with a DVD, complete with all of the Veg. files so that you can see it first hand.

This book has information on every aspect of DV. It's a must have, regardless of your skill level.

Good advice to read "help" and the other resources.

Meanwhile, if there are effects you must use at the track level (instead of the event level), you may need to dedicate a complete track to that effect -- even if it only consumes a short number of frames.

Also read about keyframing where you can often limit an effect to a small portion of the event, and you can also bring the effect in more gradually.
