It could as simple as Windows running out of resources and not having enough left to show the image. Save your project, reboot and start up Vegas again and see if things are back to normal. I've seen this when I'm doing a lot of things at once.

No, the computer is fast enough and I tried everything included rebooting
and checking every item in settings. Also, when opening a video file,
it doesn't build the .sfk file! But it did!

do you have enough hard drive?
salad wrote on 9/13/2002, 6:04 PM
This doesn't sound good.
Do you have any other type of media you can drag into VV....bmp's, jpeg/mpegs, wave or mp3?
Do these files open ok in WinMedPlyer? Try relocating the media to another HD?
Uninstall/reinstall? Don't re-register until it's working.....you have 30 days.

I have enough disk space and WindowsMediaPlayer, Adobe
Premiere play the files ok. I reinstalled Vegas, no use.

Ok, I read your replies...

You might try clicking on the bypass button on the preview window,,, that will bypass all FX... maybe you got a bad plugin.

Just to confirm, the tracks in the timeline and the trimmer show no pictures?

Have you accidently pressed the preview to external monitor button on your video preview screen?
salad wrote on 9/13/2002, 7:58 PM
I'm thinking....that was MartyH's next question......but we're waiting for a reply on the question "the tracks in the timeline and trimmer show no pic's?"

But, then again, GR did mention editing/splitting black frames on the timeline. I've only seen this with invalid formats.
Mista GR wrote on 9/13/2002, 8:08 PM
Guys,

I've clicked preview on external monitor buttons, bypass efx,
they never caused a thing like this earlier. And yes, there's
no pictures in timeline and trimmer, only black squares.
IT DOESN'T BUILD A PEAK FILE FOR VIDEO!
And it's not about bad format, the same file played well today earlier.

Guys, thank you...
Roman.

Alot of stuff that plays okay in Windows Media Player just doesn't seem compatible with Vegas (I believe it's a Codec related issue - correct me if I'm wrong). You should see the audio part of the Video file, but with just black frames.

as suggested above, try dragging something else onto the Vegas timeline - a JPEG picture file, or a video file that you have use succesfully before.

It started when I realized that the file which I've worked with a few
time (an hour) ago just don't draw on timeline now. I didn't change file format!
It's an avi with stereo sound. Now, when deleting sfk, it builds .sfk file,
but does it too quickly. And after that there's still no img's (frames) in timeline or
trimmer, and audio file is blank too! No peaks/no sound! And for video files
that doesn't include audio it doesn't build .sfk's at all. I just hope it's
something in Vegas or Windows settings, that somebody accidentally changed.
But how could I find it...
Tyler.Durden wrote on 9/13/2002, 8:54 PM
Ok GR, let's get back to basics...

WHat are yer system specs?

WHat version VV?

What version WMP?

Any other video apps onboard?

Any recent installs/uninstalls?

Do any other formats play in VV - MOV, .PNG, .WMV, WAV, etc.

GR -
Just to clarify a point:

*.SFK files have nothing to do with the video part of a file - there are entirely to do with any audio present in the Vegas project, weather it be part of the video file or as a seperate audio track dragged into the project. They are, as far as I know, the graphical representation of the sound wave that you see on the timeline. It takes longer for Vegas to build them on long files simply because there is more audio to 'work through'. You can safely delete them at any time - Vegas (or any other SoFo app) will just recreate them as an when it needs them. This usually happens when you use the file again. If you don't want to wait for the *.SFK file to be made, you can cancel the 'building peaks' process - it just means you won't see the representation of the audio wave. Hitting F5 rebuilds audio peak files in a project - again, this does not change the actual audio in any way (or the video...)

I'm not sure if what you're experiencing now is what happened to me before. I got no picture, only audio but the files play fine on my powerdvd and premiere. Try going to FILE/PROPERTIES and click on Video and try changing the Template. That's what I did after fixing my codec problem. Hope this helps.
SonyEPM wrote on 9/16/2002, 8:25 AM
what kind of file is this? DIVX maybe?
Slobra98 wrote on 9/17/2002, 6:37 AM
I'm having the same problem(kinda) as you.
I've been using VV for about 3 months now and it's always worked great til this week.
Yesturday i noticed everytime i open any of my mpg's into VV, i can see the video just fine but when i hit playback or render to new format, all i get is a black screen and nothing else.
I am getting sound but no video, no matter what i've tried.
I thought maybe it was ati's drivers again but nope, even when i used old old ati drivers(8500dv) it still didn't make a difference.
I can play any of these videos i ripped myself in WMP(other players) and they play just fine no problems.
I myself havn't changed a thing to my system, the only thing i've done is update Win2k in windows update.
I would like to know why this is doing this and my bet is it's going to be another driver/codec problem from someone else and not sonicfoundry.
thanks for any help on this subject.

System...
1800 XP
512 ddr
ati aiw 8500dv
Sound blaster Audigy
120 gig 4meg buffer on both hdd's
my whole system is also water cooled(CPU/chipset/video card/both HDD's
Win2k(with newest SP pack)

Even though you can use MPEG, WM, Indeo, some Divx, and quite a few other formats as source material in a Vegas project, these are not ideal. Weird stuff can happen, especially when all the frame data is not in every frame. Whenever possible, you should use the source formats we test most rigorously...and those are:

DV .avi or uncompressed .avi for Video
.png and .bmp for Stills
.wav and .pca for Audio

Stick with the above and you'll get great results every time.

Slobra98 wrote on 9/18/2002, 11:04 AM
My only problem with that is, uncompressed .avi can be huge.
A lot of times i may have a clip that 20 mins long i have to rip and i don't need 1 file that 15gigz.
Understand, not everyone that uses VV has 400gigz of space.
I have 100gigz and still run out of room but at the sametime, VV isn't the only thing i do on this system.
