Please Help - Preview Frame Rate Problems

When trying to play a video the preview screen lags terribly.

Videos - Doesnt matter if Im trying to play a WMV video or anytype..still lags. I have the template using the same layout as the video itself. I have Preview - Auto..Turned off all the special options like fit to preview...all that doesnt make a difference. I know about Shift-B but it lags even when playing a single track that has no effects added to it. That cant be right. Ive messed with the dynamic ram to preview device..I dont know what else to do..its so annoying

My Specs

Gateway GT5674
AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core 2.20 GHZ
RAM - 4GB

The videos render fine and I turn off all background programs to give it as much juice as possible. The program itself runs super quick..no lag so I dont see how it could be a power problem..its only the preview screen that lags terribly. Ive been searching for an answer now for over a week so any help would be so greatly appreciated. If you need any info just let me know and ill be glad to find out.

Could my graphics card memory have something to do with it?

Which version of Vegas are you running? .. Exactly what kind of media? You say anything, but does this include standard def AVI files that Vegas Capture creates? Have previous versions of Vegas run ok on the same media?

I don't believe that dynamic ram will help with previewing except for Shift-B. I don't think Vegas makes use of the video card either. Generally, I think, it's CPU power that counts. Conflicts with the CODEC could also cause problems. Has something changed in your system lately?

I have Vegas Pro 9

I had Vegas 9 Platinum before this and had the same issues..Silly me thought Pro would improve it.

I have tried WMV, M2TS,MP4 all have the same issues..preview lag

If you are rendering ok, then drop a clip on the timeline and render to a standard AVI file in Vegas. This render should be relatively loseless in terms of quality. See if this clip will preview ok in Vegas as an AVI. If it does, then that might be a solution -- to convert your files. I've done this many times, especially with highly compresed MP4 files. I've also used a free program named SUPER to convert files to a standard AVI format for use in Vegas. The files you are running may be very compressed. I think this will give Vegas problems as it tries to decode and play them. A faster CPU would help that problem -- or the right CODEC. I use K-Lite for the CODEC.

Thanks, I have a couple of questions. When installing the Klite should I just choose Default installation? And once I do are there any settings I have to go in and change either on Vegas or anywhere else? Im not real familiar with Codecs

ALso with converting to AVI any suggestions as to the template? Sorry but this is a little more complicated than Vegas 9. When choosing NTSC DV my only option is 720x480 and Im wanting to go 1280x720. I guess once I rerendered It I could go back to 1280x720 with WMV but looks like that cant be good to change sizes after rendering it 3 times

Yes. Just use the default on Klite.
Regarding the M2TS files. Read this thread. It offers some solutions like the 2gb hack and also one directly from Sony involving converting to AVI or MPG for editing. M2TS

or Read this thread with other solutions that may apply to you. Proxy editing

I don't edit in HD (but that day is coming so I don't mind looking into the problems) so others might be able to help you more. Good luck.

Thanks for those. I was reading on one of those threads how you can press Shift Options to bring up a hidden Internal Menu. Do you have any idea if you can change the ram settings from there to increase speed? And if so what do I need to change? I was looking through that tab and theres alot of info in there

On a side note I did render to AVI and it worked like a charm..its a pain but thanks so much for bein patient and helping

The 6150e designation is indicating that the computer only has the built-in graphics chip found on the nVidia 430 motherboard. This is a pretty ancient video chip (The nVidia 6 series was introduced in 2004.) and it wouldn't shock me that it is the source of your problem. Have you thought of buying a separate video card? I would look at an nVidia or ATI video card in the $100-200 range, depending on your budget. You can pay a lot more, but Vegas doesn't really need anything more exotic.
