Please Recommend A Sound Card for This Vegas User.

Hi,

I participate in the Vegas Video forum. I have been using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card for the audio. It sounds OK, but I would like something better because I would like to do some audio CD's as well as the videos. What would you recommend?

I do have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and a small mixer called an M-Audio Buddy. Is this a decent combination? I haven't installed either yet, but I do know that the sound card will require Windows Media Player 7.1 or higher to play CD's and that a software midi synthesizer will have to be installed. It sounds like a bit of a nuisance. If you have something better in mind please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

John

A MidiMan Audiophile is fine, and so is a Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz has a hardware-based synthesiser, but this has nothing to do with playing CDs...

You don't need Media Player 7.1 to play CDs, or a software synthesiser, although the *latest* version of Win MediaPlayer is alway preferable (and a free download).

Hi John,

I own the 2496 and am very happy with its quality in playback and recording. I do my audio editing in Vegas Video 3.0 and have no complaints about the results. It is a fantastic card and you won't get better quality for the price. I can't comment on the M-Audio Buddy as I don't own one, though I have heard it is a good low-priced, low-noise preamp. I think that regarding Windows media player and CDs: your pc will be using the windows drivers to pull the data off the pci bus as opposed to using an analog/digital passthrough cable directly to the soundcard. This is preferable if you want to rip the data quickly and directly off the CD. I don't think that it is necessary to use WMP for playback though, as I use Exact Audio Copy and WinAmp with no problem. VV 3.0 and the 2496 are ASIO compliant so they play very well together.

Good luck,

Michael

p.s., thanks for the information you posted regarding the CenDyne deal. What is the source of that Staples code? (The second one you posted)

Thanks for the reply Michael,

I may very well use the M-Audio instead of the Santa Cruz especially since it has digital inputs and the Santa Cruz does not.
