Please Recommend A Sound Card for This Vegas Video User - Anyone?.

Hi,

I participate in the Vegas Video forum. I have been using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card for the audio. It sounds OK, but I would like something better because I would like to do some audio CD's as well as the videos. What would you recommend?

I do have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and a small mixer called an M-Audio Buddy. Is this a decent combination? I haven't installed either yet, but I do know that the sound card will require Windows Media Player 7.1 or higher to play CD's and that a software midi synthesizer will have to be installed. It sounds like a bit of a nuisance. If you have something better in mind please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

John

A MidiMan Audiophile is fine, and so is a Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz has a hardware-based synthesiser, but this has nothing to do with playing CDs...

You don't need Media Player 7.1 to play CDs, or a software synthesiser, although the *latest* version of Win MediaPlayer is alway preferable (and a free download).

Hi John,

I use the 2496 in conjunction with VV3 for audio-only as well as audio/video projects. For the dollar, I don't think you can get a higher quality sound card. You don't have to use WMP7.1 to play your CDs (I use Exact Audio Copy or Winamp for CD playback); any software cd player will do, though the CD audio will get to the M-Audio digitally by way of windows drivers, not by routing the sound through a pass-through cable directly to the card. Of course this gives you the advantage of faster rips than recording your cds through the card.

VV and the MAudio are ASIO compliant so they play very very well together in the input/output phase.

I can't speak about the M-Audio Buddy, though I have heard it described as an affordable, clean mic preamp. It sounds like you are in pretty good shape.

It isn't too much of a hassle to work with the 2496's midi, and there are good solutions out there for midi, including M-Audio's own Midisport 2x2. http://www.m-audio.com/products/midiman/USB2x2.php

Good luck,

Michael

p.s., thanks for posting that info about the CenDyne deal. Where did that second Staples coupon number come from? The first is expired and I still want to try to use the info you provided

Thanks for the reply Michael,

I may very well use the M-Audio instead of the Santa Cruz especially since it has digital inputs and the Santa Cruz does not.

The coupon code links I have are as follows:

Make a folder in your bookmarks section and label it COUPONS. Check them all, sometimes you can find a code that works that only one of them has posted.
