This could be reworked to only look at audio tracks and remove everything in areas that have no audio events:

Vegasaur will find silence in one or more events and ripple delete (or just delete) the video and audio where silence is detected. You can control the parameters for detecting silence.

There are several transitions you could use for zooming. There's even a transition category called Zoom.
