PluralEyes

PluralEyes is simply the best if you roll multiple cameras or separate sound. Just wish someone would have clued me in on this tool along time ago. I have been syncing footage the hard way for to long. Hopefully this saves someone else some life, as a pay it forward.

Yep, me too. Been using it for a couple of years now I think. Unbelievable time saver for me - though it's not infallible.

The most reliable PluralEyes sync results are obtained when there is a decent audio 'scratch track' on the video.
Sescom manufactures cables with the proper attenuation to go from a portable audio recorder's headphone or line-out to a DSRL's mic input, They are available from Markertek.com. http://audio-video-supply.markertek.com/search#w=Sescom%20DSLR and the other usual suspect vendors.
FWIW, Markertek builds them in their upstate NY custom cable facility. .Markertek took over Sescom after Sescom founder/ president Frank Miller passed away a few years ago.

Agreed with rraud's general suggestion. I always run a stereo line out from my audio recorder into my camera, all XLR on my equipment. That not only provides a stereo backup, but also a very high quality scratch track. Even if I have to synch by eye, the waveforms are very easy to match this way.

I am real nasty with different inputs, and PE just sits there smugly, going - "Is that's yer best shot?!? Reaally! Teh..."

Yes, I can mess things up, but when it's right...it's right!

I purchased the V3 PE update. For the life of me I can't see any speed improvement, and, V2 is far more reliable in sync'ing the tracks.

Anyone else noticing V3 basically doesn't work?

Anyone else noticing V3 basically doesn't work?Yup. Ditto to that.

I never owned PE until V3 came out and they did a promotion. It came with both V2 and V3, so I naturally installed V3. The sync was very unreliable and easily fooled. I wrote to PE tech support but while waiting for a reply I uninstalled V3 and instead installed V2. Everything worked first time, every time. Tech support got back to me within a day (very good support) and suggested that, with V3, I should enable the "try harder" option (I forget now exactly what it was called). I did, briefly, reinstall V3 and with that option enabled it worked almost as well as V2, but was no longer faster. The main advantage of V3 was that it was supposed to work faster.

In the end, since you typically only run PE once per project, if it takes three minutes instead of one minute, the savings really doesn't matter compared to not having it do the job.

So, my recommendation is to stay with version 2.

Thanks John.
What's comical is that during NAB last year I sat in on a demo where the creator of PE gave a demo of the (yet unreleased) PE3 on Windows. How ever he had things set up, the sync of a few items on his Vegas timeline took only a few seconds to complete. This of course wowed the audience.
Something drastic must have occurred from that non-released version to what we have now.

I recall I did set the V3 to 'try harder' - made no diff. Luckily I only paid $40 or so for the upgrade. Perhaps some day they'll fix it.

PE was sold by Bruce to Red Giant after version 2.
Boris released version 3, quite a bit later than announced.

I am still using version 1.2.4 (4857).

It works just fine for the most part. Has difficulties with not so great audio such as can happen with theater videos. It is quite slow in rendering all of those audio temp files.

I am wondering how much would I benefit from upgrading to version 2.

I do not see any upgrade special prices for upgrading from version 1. Would I get version 2 even if I pay for version 3?

Thanks.

I feel about the same. I use both V3 and V2 .. V2 often is the better choice (for sure V3 is no big improvement) but overall Plural Eyes has saved me huge amounts of time in the situations where I can't get any kind of slate or clapper to sync to which actually I find easier than Plural eyes altogether.

Version 3 is "prettier" but useless. when I place multiple clips to sync it hangs and does NOTHING. Version 2 works as it should.

Just some historical Update information regarding PE3, which I garnered from the RG>>PE3 site, PE 3 is now up to PE3.3.0 for Windows and 3.3.1 for Mac FCP X10.1

During last year there were a total of 7 Pleural Eyes 3 updates. It would appear somebody has been very busy at Red Giant. Likewise, for Vegas Pro12 with SCS, how many Build releases of Vegas Pro have there been in 2013?

In light of all this change and programming activity, here are the latest Downloads/Updates: 3.3.0 ~ 2013-11-26 ~ Update Details ~ Download for Windows | Download for Mac

If anybody is interested in installing the latest PE 3 Updates, here it be! Red Giant

And here are Red Giant's comments about the latest Updates in Nov last year. :

I try to keep the latest builds of Vegas and any 3rd Party stuff going. I'm assuming that the discussion here is relating to the latest Builds of PE and Vegas Pro (B770)? Otherwise the comparisons would be fraught.

My experience with PE3.3 (that's the latest build for PE for Windows) has been the best so far. My typical testing, client-delivery, has been with XF300 (MXF), Canon SD, Canon SX50hs (MOV) and iPhone.

Cheers

Thanks Grazie!
PE3 has been so disappointing, I haven't even thought about updating. Definitely worth checking the latest version and downloading the patch!

Byron, maybe it'll be worth it - I dunno. But it would appear that RG+PE programmers have been a tad busy.

As to John's experience with RG, that's infuriating to say the least. I'm still banging on their door about support for MBL in VP12 B770 - or any build of VP12. I'm going to BVE next month, here in London, and meeting the RG hierarchy is going to be high on my list of "Must-Dos" - that and meeting the SONY chappies! Maybe I'll mention the need for "responsiveness" to User's requests for support?

With my limited experience with PluralEyes, improving the sound levels on cameras with low sound helps with sync. I tend to normalize any cameras with low levels, during my batch convert to HD EX prior to editing. Then I sync the converted footage.
