Two things have to happen in this order:

1) To make a transparent PNG file, the save/write command for creating the file has to have a setting that specifies that file to save a transparency channel- otherwise PNG format is not equipped to automatically have a transparent channel. Many software products allow your to go back and forth between settings - but look at how your own program does this.

2) The load/read cycle of software (in this case Vegas) has to be able to interpet the kind of transparent channel that exists or even if there is one. Usually the read software can do this interpret on the fly but sometimes you need to really examine the file loaded properties to see if it has done this process. Vegas allows you capture the properties by manually tick-off , transparent channel, likely type straight-unmatted....

Presumably your PSD file has a text layer and a white background layer named Background. Most likely that background layer is locked but as long as there's another layer of text you can just turn off the visibility of everything under the text layer. You'll see your text on top of a checkerboard pattern.

I always save my PNG files from Photoshop using it's Save For Web and Devices tool (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S). It gives you lots of options for PNG. The most important is a checkbox for Transparency. This is how I save my PNGs and jpegs. I'm afraid I don't know how to do it the "normal" way anymore.

PNG transparency works fine for me in Vegas this way. I never have to muck about with Vegas' settings for alpha channels.
