PNG files are not loading correctly in Vegas Pro 32bit Pixel format

my1sec wrote on 12/9/2023, 11:09 PM

Hi,

I've been Googling for a couple nights and can't find a clear answer, so I'm asking for help here.

In the Project Properties, I set the Pixel format to 32 bit floating point (full range) and also set the Media Properties of the PNG file to Straight (unmatted). The PNG file does not load correctly, for example, it is desaturated or not visible on the screen. I tried it with a PSD file and it also did not load correctly, as it did with the PNG.

Of course, if I change the Pixel format to 8 bit in the Project Properties, it works fine.

I would like to display the PNG with alpha channel correctly in 32 bit floating point settings, is there any way?

I need help.

Thanks.

Right click on your PNG event, scroll down to Properties, and set the Color Space to sRGB. Does that help?

mark-y, thanks for your time and advice, I tried changing to sRGB but that didn't solve the problem.

Upload one of your PNG files to Drive and I'll look at it. Post the link here.

PNG 파일 중 하나를 드라이브에 업로드하면 제가 살펴보겠습니다. 여기 링크를 게시하세요.

Thank you once again, mark-y

(This is a PNG file with a light shadow added around the black lettering, and everything else is transparent).

@my1sec Hi, got to be honest I know very little about this & don't know why you're using 32 bit floating point but I know I have a few 10bit files & after reading on here I have a project preset that's 32bit floating with colour at rec 2020 1000nits, that makes the 10bit clips I have look correct, so I changed your png to rec 2020 also & i can see the shadow,

Not the best video to show it but dragging the clips away clearly shows the shadow (you can't see black text on a black background of course)

I'm more then happy to be corrected & educated on this

PS, my pics above are Good (Half). these below are Good (Full)

Gid, thank you for your kind words and help.

I've been working with 8-bit pixel format and was just diving in to see what the differences are in a 32-bit pixel format environment, and then I noticed that my PNG files weren't loading properly, and I've been struggling for days trying to figure it out.

I was just about to say to myself "Whatever will be, will be" and give up, but you've been a huge help to me.

I'll try to change the settings as you suggested and test it out.

Hi @my1sec,

The file I downloaded is generic 8 bits per channel PNG, RGB with Alpha channel.

When the MediaInfo tool reports these files as 32 bit, it really means 8+8+8+8 RGBA, not 32 bits per channel. This causes a lot of confusion until one learns to read between the lines.

There is no particular advantage to opening an 8 bpc image in a 32 bit float project; even if you grade and render in a high bit depth environment it is still just 8 gallons of water in a 32 gallon barrel. No bitwise interpolation or upconversion takes place.

If you need to use these images alongside 10 bit video in a 32 bit project you can do so, by setting the media properties to the correct native color space, in this case sRGB.

Vegas doesn't automatically select a Media Color Space for still images, nor are the wide gamut image profiles included. If you need profiles for Adobe RGB or ProPhoto high bit stills, I have shared a bunch of accurate conversion LUTS here:

Don't hesitate to ask more questions when you have them.

I assume you don't have an HDR10 or Rec2020 display but just the normal computer monitor.
So you'd set your project to ACES-sRGB.
In IDT choose linear Rec709.

Yelandkeil, Thank you for your time and valuable teachings.

Mark-y, You've done a great job of showing me the way when I was lost, and it's really helped me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
