Poor render quality

Here's something I don't quite understand:

I'm importing to Vegas from DVCAM. When I edit on Vegas, Print to Tape, everything looks fine. When I render the timeline (cuts only edit) to AVI the footage looks blocky, pixelated, mosquito'd etc.
I thought maybe this was just a result on looking at the avi on my computer monitor. So I render to mpeg2 (Main Concept default settings) and look at the DVD on my TV and it looks really horrible. But, again, when I print the same timeline to tape, play the DV tape on same TV it looks fine.

Help. I'm very confused.

What are your render settings? Taht's the first thing I'd look to, whether it's print to tape, or rendered as final project. If your preview window is sized really small, that too, will affect output from the Preview window to external. But it won't affect a render or PTT.

I don't understand. What is a "cuts only" render. If you mean "selectively prerender video, it seems to work for me, although I hardly ever use it. The real time preview is generally good enough. Some times I use "dynamic ram preview" for complicated edits when I want to see how it will look. Render to AVI seems to produce pristine video. If you want to print to tape you could use "selective pre render" and print should be fine. If you are having problems with this, you could render whole project to AVI and then print. I have done both with no problems. Currently most of my projects are going to DVD, so I render to Mpeg 2. This has also worked fine.
