Poor Rendering Quality

Just started using Vegas Movie Studio +DVD about a week ago and am VERY dissapointed with the quality of MS rendering. The final image looks soft, like it's been interpolated from a single field - this is NOT the case when I use Adobe Premiere LE. I've tried no end of adjustements in the templates - the ONLY way to get a render that looks as sharp and detailed as the original is to render in either MPEG-2, 24P (which makes the image jerky since it's NTSC) or in Windows Media 9 at 3Mbp/s.

Also, the MPEG-2 render template is totally unsatisfactory - it's set for a very low bitrate - is there anyway to get a template that's set for around 7mbp/s or so? Since Movie Studio doesn't allow any custom bitrate adjustments for MPEG-2 encoding, this limitation is very annoying.
