Poor still shot quality on Burn CD

I am fairly new to the Vegas program and this is my first post on this forum. I am not trying to do anything too complex with Vegas only make a photo montage for my sister’s wedding. I have scanned a bunch of still shots at 600 pdi and looking at them using the standard Windows picture viewer, they look fine. However, once I render the project (not sure what I should render it as), burn it to a CD (Video CD) and view it on a standard TV, the image quality is really poor and pixilated. I’m sure someone has encountered the same problem, could you please let me know what I need to do to the picture or the rendering process to make the quality at least as good as the still shots. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Avoid VCD. It is a very low resolution MPEG1 file and will not look as good as your original no matter what you do.

To keep the high quality you need to either burn to a DVD or use a higher quality SVCD format. This may not play on other computers though because it requires that an MPEG2 codec be installed, which is not installed by default with windows.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response. Looking at the possible rendering templates, I only have VCD PAL or VDC NTSC under the MPEG type. Do you have a recommendation for "save as type"? Maybe Video for Windows? There are lots of different ones. Will it still work on the "burn CD" function? Is that the standard way to make a presentation on a DVD player?

Thanks again...I'm slowly learning.

I like using mpeg-1 @ 640x480 ~3mbs bitrate, & mpeg layer 1 audio. That normaly works fine from a CD (but not a video cd, it has to be played on a computer)

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the response. If I want to make a CD play in a DVD player, what format do I need to burn it in? I've been using the "Video CD", but perhaps the "Media CD" would be better. I'd like to present this photo montage at a rehersal dinner and the chances of having a computer with projector is limited. However, if it would be a better way to present it (quality etc) then I'll make the necessary arrangements to play it via a computer.

Thanks,
Mark

To make a SVCD you need to encode using mpeg-2. You get the mpeg-2 encoder as part of DVDA. If you don't have DVDA then you will not have the encoder.

Vegas without DVDA comes with Mainconcept's Mpeg2 encoder. You just have to register it the first time you use it.

With the mpeg2 option, you could use the SVCD template. This will give you better quality and will play in most DVD players.
