Popping sound

I never had this problem while I was using the onboard sound but now that I am using an Asus Xonar Essence STX, I get a popping sound almost every time I start playing a clip in Vegas Pro. I thought the card was defective and replaced it. But the new one does the same thing all over again.

Has anybody else experienced anything like that?

What type of driver is installed, and what are the buffer settings ?

The driver is Asus' own driver. According to the settings in preferences, Vegas uses Microsoft Sound Mapper (for both output and input). The number of buffers is set to 4. The buffer size says MME and the priority is set to Time Critical.

Your enquiry made me look further at the driver and its settings. I found a button called SVN (Smart Volume Normalization). When it's on, I get the popping sound whenever some sounds start playing. When I turn it off, the problem goes away.

Thanks for directing me the right way.

Good thing you found that, you certainly don't want your sound card messing with the audio levels on playback, makes it impossible to know exactly what your finished product will sound like.

That was one reason I wanted a very good sound card. I work using the old programming saying: GIGO - garbage in, garbage out. I don't believe you can expect a quality output if you use inferior components.
