Pops and ticks perhaps not latency

I am using Vegas 5 on a P3 750 w/ 750 megs of Ram.
I am using an old Roland VS-880ex as my board essentially. I come out of that into an M-audio 2496. When I record a guitar using its pickup I do not experience ticks and pops, however when I attempt to use a microphone thru a pre-amp I seem to get these intermitent pops and clicks. I adjusted latency but still the problem persists. I have Acid 4 installed on my computer as well and I have heard this version is very buggy and this may be related to my problem. Anyone experince similar problems? Also, I noticed if I render the track the ticks and pops seem to dissipate some.

I has a similar problem when I got my FirePod.
It turned out that I really just couldn't here the pops when I recorded something that was of a consistent higher volume. It was very apparent when recording vocals.
So try this...
It was my DMA (Direct Mode Access) setting for the hard drive. Make sure is tuned on or set up to Auto in the BIOS. Go to Device Manager and make the the drive is set for "use DMA if present" (or something like that).
This has worked for several people.

Hope it works for ya.
