pops/shuttering sound

joejon wrote on 9/17/2005, 2:43 PM
I posted this in the Vegas Audio forum, but thought I'd post it here also. I was having trouble with dropped frames, but since I've upgraded my RAM it seems okay. I'm still getting some clicks/snaps/pops with sometimes what I call shuttering of the sound. The playback to a TV using the A/V output plays back perfectly. I've tried a different cable from the camera to the firewire port. I've also used a different Digital8 camera. So I know it's not the camera or the cable because I get the same results. I don't know if the sound card or the firewire port would be the next thing to look at and how to check that. The sound card (SB Audigy 2) has the firewire port right in it. Maybe there's a setting I need to look at. Please list any things I should look at. Thanks

If it’s just during playback you could have your playback buffers set too small. If you are using the Audigy2 ASIO drivers you might have the latency set too low. If you are not using the Audigy2 ASIO drivers, switch to them and it might clear things up. I wouldn’t set the latency lower than 8ms with an Audigy2 card.

I've also hear the firewire port on that card has some issues.
However you can well find things don't look/sound too good during capture but in fact the tape is being captured just fine, don't assume something is broken based on what you see/hear during capture.
Check what you've captured by dropping the file into Vegas and playing that back with preview set to Preview-Auto.

Could you tell me how to check the drivers and also how to set them? It lists under Sound & Audio Devices the SB Audigy Audio [D8CO]. I don't know if this is what your talking about. I went to the help to find out how to set the latency, but it didn't help me. I went to Sound Blasters web site and did the Auto Update for drivers. I got some error message during the installation and now I get a message every time I start up Vegas-"The Creative ASIO devices have changed. You may need to restart this program before using ASIO devices". I don't know what to do about that. It also said on their web site to set the sample rate under File/Project Properties to 48 KHz instead of the 44KHz for Audigy2 cards. Any comments about that?

Yea, the Soundblaster series of cards from the $49 SBLive to the $200 Audigy Platinum are only capable of 48KHz 16-bit audio in hardware. That’s it! All of the others settings that they show on their web site are conversions done in their software drivers and NOT the actual capabilities of the card. (in fact there was a class action law suit suing Creative for deceptive marketing)

ASIO drivers talk directly to the hardware bypassing the Soundblaster drivers and so you can’t lie to the hardware. If you want to use the ASIO drivers (and you should) you MUST set your project up for 48KHz 16-bit sample depth.

In Vegas:
1. Press Atl+ENTER to bring up the Properties dialog.
2. Select the Audio tab and pick a Sample rate of 48,000 and Bit depth of 16.
3. Then check Start all new projects with these settings and press OK.

Now go to:
1. Options > Preferences > Audio Device
2. For the Audio Device Type select the Creative ASIO or one that has "Audigy ASIO" in the name.
3. Click Apply to enable the Advanced button.
4. Then Press the Advanced button then the Configure button and set the latency to 10ms or 7ms and Press OK three times to dismiss all the dialogs.

That should do it. It’s important to set the project correctly BEFORE changing the driver selection. Otherwise you will get an error that the driver doesn’t support the project properties.

To set your rate in Vegas to 48,000 Hz, this is done in Vegas Project properties. (The Icon above your preview window in Vegas, on the far left) then the audio tab and you'll see the window in there.
To set your latency in Vegas, go to your Options/Preferences/Audio Device. (Here, at the top, you can set which audo device from the dropdown list) Then go to the bottom and you'll see an "Advanced" button. Click that then you'll have to hit the "Configure" button. You can adjust your latency from there. (mine has a dropdown and I can't choose "8". It goes from "10" to "7".)
The drivers, on the otherhand, have to be done through "Creative". Go to that site and look for updated drivers. They usually come with instructions on how to install them.
EDIT: See how long it took me to look this up? Somebody beat me by 12 minutes.

I set the rate to 48KHz. Now, in the Options/Preferences/Audio Device you said to select something with Creative or Audigy in the name. These are the options available in the drop down list for Audio Device Type - Microsoft Sound Mapper,
Direct Sound Surround Mapper,
Windows Classic Wave Driver
Then for the Default Recording Device it lists only Microsoft Sound Mapper. In the Advanced Tab there is nothing with latency unless these are the same thing - Interpolate position (set to 0), Audio buffers (set to 4), or Buffer size (set to MME, but can be set to 64 or more). Should I try reinstalling the drivers for the sound card?

If you have a Creative card, it should be listed in the "Audio Device" dropdown. I have both 'SB Audigy ASIO (1040)' and 'Creative ASIO' listed under the ones you mentioned and you can choose from any of those.
You should be able to see these settings in the dropdown. I'm not sure what to tell you, as mine has always showed up in the dropdown.
The latency thing will show up, once you can check SB Audigy ASIO.

Yea, it sounds like you don’t have the Creative ASIO drivers installed. I would go to the Creative site and get the latest drivers for the Audigy 2 card and re-install them. You should have the ASIO options (Creative ASIO, SB Audigy ASIO [xxxx]) that TheGr8Steve mentioned in the dropdown.

PS: The main reason I started answering this was to inform you, that my sound, while capturing, has always been horrible. It always sounds fine on playback, but not while capturing. You'll have to run your audio cables out of your camera to an amp, to hear clearly while capturing (will not work with passthrough. Y off the cables into camera to amp). (The audio guys usually say the Creative cards are actually not very good
