Possibly strightforward AVI import question

Hi guys,

I have Vegas 4 and I'm trying to open an uncompressed AVI from my PVR software (Showshifter) so I can edit it. When I try, the audio opens fine but I get a (partial) video message of "Stream attributes can not be" and no video track.

Vdub opens it without a problem. I'm tracking down more info on the AVI to see whether there is a setting I might have missed, but does anyone have any suggestions or clues? I've also tried the MS DSHOW AVI setting in my other program but I get the same message from Vegas.

I'm pretty stumped on how to proceed, I was surprised that the MS DSHOW avi didn't work.

Any advice or help would be appreciated,

Jil

Hi J,

If your PVR is a TV time-shifting application, it is not likely uncompressed video... (that takes huge amounts of disk and processor).

One thing to check first is if windows media player can open and play the files. If YES, then Vegas should be able to also.

Hi Marty,

This is pretty darn odd. Windows Media Player opens and plays it just fine. If I open it in Vdub and then immediately save it to uncompressed AVI....Vegas opens it right up, no problem.

Bizarre, huh. I wonder what Vdub is doing differently?

Your site is *great* by the way.

Hi J,

Thanks for the plug! :-)

The PVR may have a selection of codecs it uses for saving files. Some (like Divx )might not open in Vegas. You might try changing the recording format in the PVR and see if Vegas can open the file directly, since uncompressed files are pretty big and trancoding in vdub is an extra step.
