pre-rendering HDV: avi or mpeg inters?

When prerendering HDV, do you use avi intermediaries, or mpeg-2 ones? Generally speaking, the idea of an intermediary is less compression, but with a fast enough system isn't previewing in the destination format (MPEG-2) a better idea?

except that mpeg2 suffers multigenerational losses faster than the intermeds

If it's raw footage, I just use the m2t clips directly. If there's any pre-rendering involved I use Neo HDV. There is just too much generation loss with mpeg2.

Pre-renders are only for the purpose of getting a good frame rate when previewing your work on the timeline. In such a case I would think that generational loss is not a consideration at all.

If, however, you are doing a "render to new track" and then muting the source tracks, then it could be a consideration. In that case you'd be using that "pre-render" as if it were a source media.
