Pre View Window

I just got Win11 and put back my Movie Studio 15.

I have all the setting just the way I like them.

I do have my Project settings set to 1080 HD this is good for me.

I need help with the Pre View Window settings?

The options are Draft or Preview or Good or Best.

Yes I understand what all of these are.

Every one of these has the same Sub Options Auto or Full or Half or Quarter.

What are these?

@Robert-Costo Hi, Vegas - Help -

Adjusting the preview quality and resolution

Click the Preview Quality button and choose a setting from the menu to change the quality and resolution for rendering your video preview.

This setting is used for previewing only and has no effect on the final rendered video. Decreasing the preview resolution can allow the VEGAS Pro Video Preview window to display a higher frame rate, especially for complex projects that contain overlays, transitions, and effects.

The Auto setting will adjust the frame size to fit the Video Preview window size. The Full setting processes frames at the project frame size. The Half setting processes frames at half the project frame size. The Quarter setting processes frames at one-quarter of the project's frame size. For example, if you have an NTSC (720x480) project, Half creates a 360x240 preview; Quarter creates a 180x120 preview.

Have a look at the bottom of the preview window,

-----

I have a UHD 3840x2160 32" monitor, there's no point the preview trying to display the full 3840x2160, If i set the preview at Good - (Half) I don't see any loss in quality of the picture image but playback is better, I think it's because Half = 1920x1080 which is 1/4 of UHD & my Vegas Preview is slightly smaller than 1/4 of the screen, therefore the picture isn't being stretched to fit in the preview lowering the quality. If that makes sense.

If I set it to Good - (Quarter) 960x540, the quality does lower because my Preview window is close in size to 1920x1080 & the image is being stretched from 960x540 to fit in the preview.

I have my Project set to 180 HD now for my Pre View Window I select Good then for the Sub Menu I select Auto.

So if I understand you Right the Auto will have it fix the Video for Display just in the Pre View Window so the Frame Rate and everything looks good.

So what does the Main setting I selected Good do?

I think I got lost?

Is the Main settings in the Pre View Window for the RES and the Sub Menu for the Image Frame Rate?

In the data displayed below the preview window, the 'Preview' data rate will display the H / W pixel size used for the preview window display as pointed out by @Former user  It is up to you to decide which setting best suits what you want from the preview window's quality. Generally, the lower the preview window setting (e.g. Draft or Preview quality) the smoother the playback; the higher the setting (e.g. Best (full), the slower may be timeline playback - but it all depends on the media that you are using and the specs of your computer.

Setting the preview window to Best (Auto or Full) can help in color grading and using other video FX but is often not necessary in general timeline editing functions. There is no right or wrong in the choice of the preview window setting - it's what works best for you - it's a compromise between image quality and timeline playback speed.

Also, the preview window's setting has absolutely nothing to do with how the project will render. Rendering should auto set that to Best (Auto).
