Preferred Render Settings? & some minor questions

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had some preferred rendering
settings for Vegas Video that they would share? (codecs,
etc.) Maybe by sharing ideas we could all save time.

The two scenarios I am most interested in are:
1. Rendering to as high-quality as possible for export to a
DV-CAM and playback on a television.
2. Rendering to .AVI with a good balance between size and
quality for distribution over the internet.

Two other quick questions (forgive me):
1. Is there anyway to do *destructive* editing on video
clips? I want to trim down some captured clips to save disk
space.

2. I can't get shadows to work on text media events. I've
followed the instructions in the help and tried to tweak
all the settings, added keyframes, etc. but no shadow.

By the way, I use a Pyro 1394 card with a Sony Digital8
camcorder and Windows2000 and so far it works great.

THANKS for a fun product and any input on these subjects,

1. Stick with the NTSC DV Template and you will get true broadcast
quality back to your camera at about 4 minutes/GB.
2. It depends whether you mean streaming or not, or if you really
want .avi s for the internet. Either way, the key is to render to
small sizes like 320 X 240 at most and keep the length very short. I
don't think it is practical to toss avi's around the Internet
myself... Check into streaming video sites like www.eveo.com and the
VV Manual covers this pretty well.
3. The way I do "destructive" editing in the context you ask about
is: Edit the file the way you want it in a new project. Then render
it out to a new file using the same properties of the original.
Throw away the first file. If someone knows a way to do it natively
in VV I'd also like to hear about it.
4. I do ALL my text work outside of VV in programs such as Photoshop
or ImageComposer and do all desired drop shadows etc there, then
bring them into VV as .png's. Not sure if this is what you mean, but
even the manual recommends you do text work outside of VV for
superior performance.

2. Rendering to .ASF or RealMedia is the way to go for streaming over
the net. The only way to get good results is to do a lot of
experimentation. Render out several short clips with different
settings. The settings that work best will depend on what the
content of your video is.

One thing I've noticed... when rendering to asf's I like to use the
MPEG Layer III compression, but I always get audio drift problems
when the clip is longer than about 7 minutes. (the bad sync isn't
noticeable until 7-8 minutes in. Then it is intolerable.) This has
nothing to do with Vegas, but it sucks because I have to use the
Windows Media Audio instead when my clips are long. There are less
choices of bitrates with Windows Media Audio, but it doesn't sound
much worse and the sync is tight so it's not all that bad. I wish I
knew why the MPEG Layer 3 codec won't stay synced. Anyone else have
that problem?

1. There was software that could trim avi files without re-
rendering... I think Autodesk Animator Studio could do that. There
must be newer software that can do the same thing. Anyone?

2. Text plugin needs enhancements badly. It would be so much more
convenient if I could do all my text within Vegas. But there is no
support for Post Script fonts and the plugin is pretty limited in
general. I'd still use it if it had the font support.
