Prerendered Video Files

tbush wrote on 5/31/2006, 7:20 PM
Hi,
Today I was exporting to videos to mini dv tape for storage and the Vegas files prerendered on my C drive filling it up. I found where they are but everytime I try to delete them or even one (there is a bunch)...it says there is an error and it cannot delete file.

Would anyone know how I can get rid of these files?

Thanks so much, Tara

Close Vegas, or do File / New. Make sure any other program that might be referring to those files is also closed, such as VidCap or Sound Forge.

One annoyance i've noted lately (must be something that came with one of the recent Windows updates) is that whenever i click on a Media file Windows starts doing something with it. If i click a file to select it and then try to delete i'm told the file is in use. If i wait a couple of seconds and try again it will be deleted without error.

Thanks Chienworks....when I found the files by searching for video files with todays creation date...I couldn't figure out which main file the video files were in...but now I found them in the Sony Vegas 6.0 program file. I must have that selected in preferences. It is now allowing me to delete them...holy cow there was 1,130 files. I have been doing this most of the day today...so I almost got in trouble with my hard drive. I will have to be careful in the future.

I almost never use prerendered files so i haven't had that issue. However, i do have almost exactly the same problem with my temporary internet files. I had cleaned it out a couple weeks ago and then when i checked it yesterday there were 4900 files totalling almost 23GB. *sheesh* Guess i've done a lot of downloading lately.

Tara,
I have my prerendered file folders pointing to a folder on one of my data drives instead of buried somehwere in the C: drive folder mess. Makes it quick to check it to see if a lot of unnecessary files have accumulated.

To set your prerendered file folder, it is on the Project Properties tab. Unfortunately you have to change it for each of the different types of projects you do (I believe).

Thanks Dave....I have changed the file drive for the selection...I didn't realize that I had to do it for each project though.

Appreciate the advice. Tara

I believe it's for each project type. It may remember your previous setting, you'll need to play around with it.

ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

You can check out this handy lil FREE App.
It's called 'Unlocker'. After you install it... You can RIGHT CLICK any file and say "UnLock". It will tell you which program has the file locked and give you the option to release it. -This includes Windows.

It doesn't require you to Close the App, RESTART, or anything. It definitely comes in handy for me everyday. Not only when editing but also in just using Windows.

Tara, Dave,
On the 'Project Porperties' tab there is a checkbox that says 'Start all new projects with these setting'. It's unchecked by default.

If you check it, those setting will be used for each project from then on.

Also, on the 'Options' settings, there is one that says 'Save active prerenders on project close'. Not sure what is the default - I have mine checked. If unchecked, I believe prerenders will not be kept after the project is closed.

Tom,

Thanks, I knew about that switch. The question I had about that was what happened when you then selected another project template, whether the folder stayed the same as when you last set it. It does.

So Tara, pick the project you use most often, point the prerendered folder to your new folder and click the start all projects with this setting, then save. Then even if you pick a new project template, your folder setting is preserved.
