Prerendering error with Mpeg2

northerner wrote on 9/3/2002, 12:36 PM
Attempting to prerender a video segment using Mpeg2 results in an error message saying that it can't prerender the video segment because an "unknown error has occurred"

This happens with every factory template except "default". It even fails the same way if you save the "default" template as "test" and use that one without making any other changes.

I'm using Vegas video 3.0c

Probably hardware or source file related. Whenever I use prerending it works flawlessly.

is there a reason you are prerendering as MPEG-2?

It may be hardware or source related but another guy has tried it and it fails the same way with different hardware and source, so I have my doubts.

Why am I using Mpeg2? Archiving stuff to CD.

All applications have a default error message that pops up when a more specific error message hans't been written for a specifc fault. In Vegas Video, "unknown error has occurred" is what you see when that happens. If there were a "bug" in the application itself, it would crop up more often. Lots of people render to MEPG-2. I've made dozens of hours worth without any trouble, which is why I suggested it may be a hardware or source file problem. Do you have any third party codecs installed? Does it happen with every files or just some? While a brute force method, sometimes just uninstalled and reinstalled software cures a lot of weird problems. One or more DLL's may not have be registered correctly to Windows's Registry. If nobody from SoFo responds to you here, time to give them a call for more specific advice.

I think folks are missing the point here. Pre-Renders are done only to the SF DV CODEC. The dialog should not have the other options in it. Pre-rendering is to put the content in the DV CODEC with the effects rendered so that VV can play them back at full speed or just read them directly into a final print to tape. MPEG-2 is a quality loss and is difficult for VV to read at any speed. It also would not be output to tape. MPEG-2 is not a supported prerender.

I am surprised that SF did not respond to this right away. They normally monitor closely.

If I am wrong, SF please correct me.

I'll post the reply from SF if it turns out to be something others might find useful.
(I opened a call with them prior to posting this question)

Actually, we allow pre-renders in any format, but DV is really the most useful, and the default. The others are there in case they are needed to match your project size or framerate, something that DV can't do for all sizes/rates.

That said, a pre-render to MPEG is not going to do you any good when it comes to final output, because they are oddly named and short segments. Use a pre-render format that matches your source media and/or project, and then just do a final render to MPEG when you're done.
