PreRendering MXF question

One of the ways that I like to work, is to pre-render sequences as I am working "Render to a new track".

By doing this, I have a "firm and fixed element" that won't change and will play quickly - particularly if it contains a lot of opticals.

I have been searching the new Vegas 11 64 bit (which I am loving) to find the best, most lossless, quickest to render and (particularly) - one not needing to re-render when I'm laying everything off (to MPEG or Quicktime, etc.)

I'm currently using the MXF HD422 1920x1080 60i.

One problem is I can't seem to find a way to avoid doing an Audio Render with this codec - is there a way (to avoid audio)?

And the other question is - is there an even better codec in Sony Vegas 11 for this purpose?

With much respect and regards to the group -

v

like you i render (when necessary) to mxf. hadn't really noticed any audio problems on the renders, but then again, they're mostly talking head or simply ambient.

(australian horses and riders talk through clenched teeth anyway! and most ceo's seem to send their audience into a trance within seconds as well).

I feel your pain Vic. I have started using XDCam .mp4 (which is the same mpeg2 video as .mxf but in a .mp4 wrapper). Although it uses the same codec, it does not require you to include audio. The downside is that it doesn't support the super high quality bitrates and formats, just the standard 35 and 25 Mbps XDCam formats.

Another problem with .mxf is that parts that initially don't smart-render in the first render (transitions, filters, text overlays, etc) will also not smart-render in subsequent smart-renders either. I have no idea why, but it is quite frustrating. XDCam .mp4 doesn't have this problem.

Hi Vic! Good to see you again.

I've got the Canon XF300 and it too produces 1920x1080i 50mb/s UFF 4:2:2. Great output. OK, "Rosebud" aka Gilles had produced a Render To New Track script leaving the Audio behind. Very useful. Now, I've been meaning to try this on my MXF footage, but you could give that a try? I don't know what it would do. However, I've used it happily on SD footage and had used it specifically for just the purpose you wish. But I've not tried it on MXF footage.

And yes, Milto, Grazie went HD!!!

Best regards

Well it's good to be back editing and asking.

But I think I've got to find my own way here, unless someone can say, "THIS IS THE WAY TO DO IT!"

I will report on my progress.
Am in the middle of the job right now.
More to come.
