Preset/Chain names don’t stick

Am I the only one that thinks it’s a pain that after you select a preset name or FX chain name, generated media name, or whatever and then go back into the dialog; the name reverts back to (Untitled)? This drives me nuts. (OK, I was nuts when I started, just ask my wife, but my mental stability, or lack there of, is no excuse! ;-) )

This is especially troublesome when you create your own presets and chains and you want to tweak them. You have to type the name all over again (and actually spell it the same way twice which is a challenge for some of us) when you should be able to just press the save icon and be done with it. And if you forget the name you gave it and you look in the dropdown list to look it up and select it by accident, it replaces all your tweaks (Ouch)! And quite the opposite is true. If I tweak and then don’t like it, all I have is multiple undo to get me out of trouble if I don’t remember what the original preset that I used was. It’s OK to revert to (Untitled) if I change the preset and don’t save it, but stock presets or ones that I save should retain thier name.

IHMO, this is an unfortunate User Interface Design flaw and should be fixed. What would it take to save the name along with the DirectX class id and then reselect that name from the drop down list? It’s a trivial amount of code and such a large payback to the end user. Please, please, please, consider fixing this. (perhaps even in a dot release 5.0b, 5.0c, etc.).

It's definitely irritating. Would be less hassle if:
a: Any filter applied with preset would be displayed with preset when that filter is recalled.
b: If preset is modified, you only need hit the save icon to update it, since the filter preset name would now be displayed in the preset window.

I don't know if it's insignificant or not, that sort of thing isn't my province, but I know Dr.D and the guys are aware of it.

I posted a complaint about this and sent in a request a few months ago. It seemed that many people agreed with me. Although its not a but, hopefully a future fix will include this as well.

Yes, agree - this was the point I added to the
"Vegas 5 Annoyances and work-arounds"
thread last week.

. . . totally works against the Creative Spirit of Vegas. As a non-programmer, how does something like this get "unhitched" from the Vegas Wagon? Actually if you did tell me I would probably not understand . . I suppose what I'm saying is that where were the beta testers on this to "flag-up" this void . . ? Honestly, how does this happen? - I'm not winging or whining here . . just wanting to know how this happens. I love my vegas!

This didn't raise any flags because it's ALWAYS been this way.

Think of it this way: the presets are a "Starting" point. You then fine tune the settings from there. Now, do you want that preset name to appear even after you've changed a few settings? Then it wouldn't make sense as it really isn't that preset any longer. Otherwise it has to keep track as to whether or not a setting was changed. Then what if you changed a setting and then reset it back to the original value? Is it still that preset? Also, you can have different presets per keyframe. As you can see, it gets really complicated in a hurry.

I'd have to respectfully disagree, Ed.
If I create a color correction package or preset, and then later discover I need to make a small tweak, I want to click on the event containing the correction, have the preset name showing in the box, and be able to tweak that preset name, and then click the save icon. this would accomplish 2 things;
One, I don't need to update all events containing this preset...
Two, I don't need to tweak, locate preset, type in preset name, and hit the icon.
It would be a HUGE timesaver, and also terrific assurance of what's happening and confidence as to what's going on.
I can actually cite several examples of wishing for this in the past 24 hours alone. I'm used to this, only because I've worked with Vegas for so long, but could appreciate more.

I will agree that there are times I wished it would recall the name of the preset I picked. However, in your case, as soon as you "tweaked" the preset - it is no longer that preset. So, what should show in the box?

There may be a possible compromise solution. What if it could remember the preset chosen but, as soon as any "tweaking" was done, it showed the preset name with the word (Modified) after it?

I wasn't disagreeing that it could be useful in some (maybe even many or most) situations - just explaining some of the logistics as I saw them.
