Preview 5.1 projects

I just installed my new 5.1 soundcard and speakers and they work great. I can play dvds and the surround sound works. When I create a 5.1project in v5 and pan the speakers to the rear it will come out of the front. The rear speakers don't seem to play anything at all. Vegas is the only program that seems to have this issue as I use windows media player and it will sound out of the rear correctly. Is there any other settings that would need to be changed in vegas other than my project properties?

What type of audio card are you using? What driver model are you using in Vegas? (Preferences | Audio Device)

Note, Vegas must have 6 analog outputs routed to its internal mixer in order to monitor 5.1 surround. Vegas does not stream encoded audio in real-time.

What this means is that you must have six (6) physcial outputs on your sound card and the sound card's Windows driver must expose 6 outputs to Vegas. Vegas must then be set up to correctly route to these outputs.

Would it be 'overkill' for something like an M-Audio Firewire 410 (currently $399)? I'm building a new system, and want the ability to preview 5.1 surround realtime from Vegas. I would go with a PCI-based solution, but since I could use an external Firewire device on both my desktop and laptop, it seems like a decent solution to me, albeit a bit expensive. Am I overlooking a much less expensive alternative?

The 410 provides the required number of outputs. It should work fine to allow you to monitor your surround mixes in Vegas.

Even a simple Audigy provides enough outputs to monitor in surround, though you will have a limit to 48 kHz when using the supplied ASIO drivers.

Beware of the mixdown bug with 410 (at least with the PCI version that I have):
Tracks assigned to Central end up in Left when the Mixdown button is pressed. Hope this issue will be addreesed soon, eventually...

you have to assign the channels to the outputs properly in the mixer. I've found that vegas tends not to do it right automatically when you change audio devices.

Yes. Options/Preferences/Audio Device.

I mix 5.1 with a Delta 410($99 btw) and have been doing so, problem free for well over a year.

Cosmo: desn't your Central go to Left when the Mixdown botton is pressed in the 5.1 mixing mode? Do you own a 410 PCI or Fire Wire?

No, I haven't experienced that. My projects seems to render/mixdown properly. I'm mixing on Vegas 4 still also...I haven't yet used 5 for any real 5.1 projects.

The card is PCI M-Audio Delta 410, 2 ins 8 outs(RCA) and S/PDIF i/o also. Normal routing. I've also used my Tascam 1884(8 ins/outs) without any problems. Much more expensive then the Delta 410 though -)
