Preview performance and multiple video tracks

When doing multi-cam stuff, my usual workflow involves syncing the tracks, muting the audio of the unwanted tracks (having checked sync more critically using headphones) and setting track motion so that I can see each track in a window in the preview prior to setting the markers and letting Excalibur do it's thing.

However, with more than about 3 tracks, preview is slowing down to the point of making it difficult to choose the shots. My system is based around an Athlon 2500+ and 1GB of Corsair EMS PC2700 running 333FSB/333Mem). I've set Vegas to use 640MB of RAM for rendering and I've tried forcing sections to render in RAM but it doesn't seem to work very well. I know I can render the result to a new file, then use that but with a long project that could take some time. So my question is:

Is there any way to turn off realtime preview and have it render to temporary files ala MediaStudio Pro?

Thanks in advance.
