Preview quality?

I am trying to make a music video and sync up the visuals to the audio. However, I cant seem to preview the video in real time, while the audio is unaffected.
I have been tossing the idea of the video size being too large to preview in real time???
In the preview screen it jumps frames by 40-80 frames, but this makes syncing impossible.
I am a complete novice so any help would be kick ask!

Which of the preview properties should I mess with?
I got it down to 40 from 80 but it's still super glitchy.

Not interested in what you are "messing" with, but perhaps someone else is.
You might start by searching "match media settings."
