Preview Settings 9.0c

Hello does preview work differently in 9.0c than in 8.0c? I've been playing around with the settings trying to get my swfs to display properly during playback. They displayed fine in Vegas 8.0 but in Vegas 9.0 they were a quarter of the screen and now they seem to be showing up different sizes at different points on the time line (full size or twice as big). I can't work out what is going on.

Ok I think I found it. Right Click the preview window and Vegas 9 has an extra setting:

"Adjust Size and quality for optimal playback"

This was checked. I unchecked it and my movie played back as expected. Checking it messed up the playback of my swfs.

Now I'm wondering what use this setting is for.

As it says: "Adjust Size and quality for optimal playback". It will give you the best FPS that can be expected from what Vegas is having to process AT THAT TIME. If it has much to process then it will change down a gear and attempt to give the best FPS. It is actually quite clever. Instead of US manually having to gauge the lower preview quality to arrive at a FPS that we can preview/audition this NEW feature will adjust automatically the quality to get a FPS that is as near to what SHOULD be achieving.

Are you still wondering?

"are you still wondering"

Yes and No. Your explanation was clear and if it automatically adjusted the quality only it might make sense, but changing the viewing size from shot to shot? In some cases it increased the size to double the viewing window. Currently it seems to make preview unstable.

If the preview window is widly changing in size and quality then what you most likely have is a fairly bad quality swf swinging itself from one end to the other in terms of output quality. Set the control for manual and adjust for best play back by hand.

The swfs in question were made at the same time using the same program with the same settings. I mixed them with still images to create the finished movie. The preview window isn't changing size (sorry, if I gave that impression). The size of the swfs is changing within the window. At first some of them were shrinking to 25% of the window. After adjusting some settings some grew to double the window size. Only when I switched the "optimal setting" option off would they fill 100% of the preview window . Also, looking at them in the project media folder the thumbnails look strange with the image shrunk top left. They display correctly with Vegas 8.

I'd like to upgrade but seeing these display differences between Vegas 8 and 9 makes me nervous.
