Hi,
My hard drives stream more than enough to provide Vegas with the necessary data.
But even without any footage, only using text and moving that sideways with pan/crop I see the preview being "sticky" or stuttery sometimes/often.
Even a 640x360 uncompressed footage / MXF coded footage or Cineform coded footage or mp4 footage or whatever, it can show full frame rate, run smoothly for a while, then a panning motion in the footage can cause stutter in teh preview windows. Regardless of preview settings, regardless of size of frame etc.

It seems to be something beyond user control in Vegas that prevents smooth and acceptable viewing.

If it isn't really easy to fix with software / settings etc. I'm not so interested in discussing why this is like it is. Btw - this seems to be a constant theme for discussion.
FYI, playing fairly steady, non-panning scenes with MXF 1920x1080 files it is running really smooth here. I canplay two streams with MXF coded 1920x1080 footage and it will be supersmooth even during a dissolve. No drop in frame rate at all.
Now have the camera pan or have something drastic move across the screen and that can cause stutter. This can happen even if I try to make the project soper-tiny-small-small, like 320x180. I have tried it with all codecs I can find. And really, uncompressed footage should be the easiest for Vegas to handle provided the hard drives do their job ok.

QUESTION 1:
WIll a product like the AJA "XENA LHi" solve my problem? Will I then see everything smoothly and stutter free? Will camera pannings be 100% (provided the hard drives deliver what they should).
Is anyone here using an AJA product to get preview that is 100% stutter free and that shows panning fine. And text made with the simple text tool in vegas moves right-left-right etc with pan/crop without stutter.
QUESTION 2:
Are people using Apple computers and FCP the same problem with stutter as Vegas users on PC.

I am so tired of being able to play a sequence, seeing it playing supersmooth, then playing it again and it's sticky and stutters. Happens mostly during panning and rapidly moving image content.
I don't want to discuss the codec thing here. The problem I'm seeing is there regardless of codec and it's there even without footage... (text only).
So. Is AJA "Xena" the solution to my problems here?
If not, *IS* there a solution or is even the fastst PC not able to adress the stutter problem?
I really love to work with Vegas and would not like to move over to anything else. At the same time - I'm determined to solve the preview quality situation. I hate stutter. Hate to sit and watch it run smoothly and then S T U T T E R.... Imagine if this was music production... totally unacceptable.
Maybe it just isn't possible to achieve good preview in a PC / computer wihout some external / extra device? Which is fine with me as long as I can find a solution. Playing stuff on my small Acer 6292 laptop is sometimes *almost* as good as on the big 64 bit studio pc with raid- etc. I have a definite feeling the stutter isn't totally linked to PC performance, feels like there's somet else in motion here.
Best & thanks in advance for your advice
Lars

(Yes Bob, I know PC's do many things and that there are reasons for limitations etc. etc. Today I just want smooth preview and I'm willing to pay for it. What should I buy?)
