Preview While Capturing HDV

vanceen wrote on 8/26/2006, 3:03 PM
I've recently replaced my camera with an HDR-HC3.

I am able to capture video using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0, but the preview window does not show the video during capture. I hear audio, but I don't see any video until the capture is complete and I drag the clip into the timeline.

I didn't have any trouble capturing with my old DV camera. I am using the internal HD capture application.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I found one thread where someone had a similar problem, and the answer seemed to be that the compressed files on the HDR - HC3 won't preview.

Can anyone confirm that? SONY technical support hasn't been able to answer my question so far.

BTW, HDVSplit works OK. I'd prefer to do my capturing within VMS, though.

VidCap is just a capture program called from VMS. If you want to use a different one go to Options / Preferences / Video and specify it there.

Thanks. Actually, I was using the internal capture program for HDV, not VidCap. I've found a freeware program that allows preview of HDV, but I'd prefer to do it all within VMS. So far, no one's been able to say if this is possible.

Bump...

Has anyone else encountered trouble previewing HDV video from a SONY HDR-HC3?

Right. I can not see a preview whild capturing HDV either from a HDR-HC3. However, I can't capther the HDV at all. I keep getting an error when I stop the capture that says the clip file could not be created because the temporaty capture file was not found.

Is there anyone who has successfully previewed HD from the HDR-HC3?

I can use HDVSplit, but there's no audio in the preview. Can anybody say if this is normal?

Help please! Any input much appreciated.

I am not using HD myself at this time, but I suggest you do a search in all the forums with the keywords "preview HD" or something along those lines. I think you will find that the majority of HD users are the Vegas (the full version) users and you may in fact find some helpful information there. Also if you go to Vaast.com you will find loads of information that could help you. Douglas Spotted Eagle has a book called "HDV, what you need to know" which would be a good resource for you. He is on the forum here as Spot/DSE. I know there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks that should be able to help you

rustier,

Thanks. I've searched the VMS forums, but not the Vegas forums. I'll give it a try.

I've read Douglas Spotted Eagle's book - very useful.

I remain surprised that there's no one here who can report success previewing while capturing from an HDR-HC3 in VMSP.

Didn't find anything that helped me on the Vegas forums.

Just for the record, I have no problems previewing while capturing from my HDR-HC1 in VMS 7.0

Maybe it's worth upgrading to version 7.0 ??

I use both VMS 6 and now 7 to capture HDV from my HDV A1e camera and had no problems with previewing. Check your project settings under the File tab, properties, maybe changing your project settings will help.

TravelJunkie,

Thanks. I'm using VMS 7.0. It's good to hear that preview is working for somebody.

Cheetah,

Thanks for your reply. I'll have a look.

I checked Properties, and HDV 1080i (29.970 fps) was selected, which should be OK. I tried 720p - 30, but that didn't work either.

Anyone have another suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Did you have to install a codec to capture from your HDR-HC1 in VMS 7, or did it work "out of the box"?
TravelJunkie wrote on 9/22/2006, 10:35 AM
... my HDR-HC1 worked straight "out of the box" (which is probably not what you wanted to hear ... Sorry!)

Well, I might have preferred to hear "just press the wizzle button and it will work", but knowing that it SHOULD work is very helpful. Thanks!

preview of HDV during capture,
works fine on my HDR HC3, no changes

Thanks, S R. I'm completely stumped on this.
