Read http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2008/12/19/sony-vegas-hints-and-tips/ "Optimize Vegas for speedy video preview" section. If it's still slow after doing all that described there, then you need to buy a new PC.

Thanks, I did all that. Allot of the hints were already in the settings.
When I reduced the size of the preview window I got a better response during playback.
What can I do with the dedicated RAM to the preview, in the preferences panel? It states that it maxs out at 1024MB.

The pre-render RAM has nothing to do with normal preview during editing. It is only used when you specifically pre-render a small portion of the video. For all the other normal viewing while editing the rest of the PC RAM is used.
