Many of the newer digital camcorders provide digital to analog pass-thru. In that case, you could just hook the camcorder up between the computer and the NTSC monitor.

Here's a popular one made by Canopus.

Some people have said, however, that for not too much more you can buy a DV camcorder that not only can convert but also act as a backup camera!

I personally use the Canopus ADVC-100 for conversion. It does it's job just fine and you can pick it up for around $275 shipped. I used it for one special VHS dubbing job and paid for it that way. You could also look at the Datavideo DAC-100 that can be had for a little over $200 shipped. Finally, as riredale stated, for about $100 more, you could pick up one of the Canon ZR series of mini-DV camcorders with passthrough.

You can also use an ADS Tech PYRO A/V Link for this (it’s what I use) I got mine for $110 from Circuit City during a Christmas sale. Amazon.com and J&R Music World has them for $160.

Folks -

I have been using a Sony TVR-33 for this. Would the Canopus or the ADS do a better job, as that is their main function?

Also - I' just ordered a Sony KVF-60XBR950 (60" LCD projection TV) and would really love a unit that could output COMPONENT, possibly even HIDEF. Does such a box exist?
