Previewing to external monitor in Vegas 5.0b

There is a preview to external monitor button selectable in my preview window. How does it work? Is it to a computer monitor? If so, whatis the use of this in all reality because it doesn't allow you to see a view until after you've rendered it on a corrected monitor.

Thanks for any help.

First, of course you don't need to render to see externally. Never have. Even Vegas 2.0c allowed external.
You only need a DV to analog converter of some sort to view it. Converter might be camera, ADS box, Canopus box, or maybe you've even got access to the new sexy monitors that have Firewire built in?
There is a tutorial on connecting at http://www.vasst.com/training/ohci.htm

I did this and it did not seem to work. Is there something that needs to be done beyond just clicking on the preview on external monitor?
Thanks

What did you use as your digital to analog convertor? If you used a camera, some cameras require that you make a menu change to switch between firewire in and firewire out.

And not all cameras support passthrough on Digital in...
You may need to go to Options/Prefs/Video and specify your 1394 device.

I had a camera that I've used before to do a print to tape preview file, but I turned on the dv-in AV-out. I'll try it again, sometime, and see if I just didn't get the camera right. I know that it's a pain sometimes to get it to accept the changes.
