Previewing video on external monitor in Vegas

Doc100 wrote on 10/4/2005, 11:05 AM
There is a button for displaying preview video to an external monitor in Vegas movie studio +DVD platinum, but the only device listed in preferences for video display is the IEEE 1394 DV output...the extended windows desktop (which I have with my ATI X700 pro video card) is not listed. Therefore, I cannot get the program to output to my second monitor. Is there a fix for this?

In the upper left hand corner of the preview window is, I believe, a row of vertical "dots". Click & drag these dots over to your second monitor, and then resize to fit your screen. That's how it worked on my system (VMS Platinum).

Hey, thanks. I will give that a try tonight. If that's a supported feature, I wonder why it is not documented anywhere in the help system....

Dragging the preview window to the other monitor isn't a feature of Vegas; it's a feature of your dual-display video card. That's why the Vegas manual doesn't mention it.

I Just installed a new dual display video card last nite and I have discovered the same situation .. I know about the dragging the preview to the other monitor but thats not the way I undersand it should work .. I have read the manual and it indicated I should be able to select the device in the preview dialog box .. So its the exavt same situation as the original poster has ..
Someone else must have come across this ..

The idea for the external monitor supported within Vegas is that you'd use this with a TV monitor; hence the need for the Firewire output to the TV monitor. You'd do this so that you can see what things will really look like on a TV rather than a PC.

As has been pointed out, as far as Vegas is concerned your dual display setup is just a really big monitor. Drag the preview window to the spot on your dual-screen setup where you want it, and you're done.

How does firewire plug into a TV Monitor ?
Is there some kind of special adaptor ?
My TV Monitor only has a RCA video input which is pluged into the RCA Video out of the video card

You would need a DV to analog adaptor. Many people use their DV camcorder for this. There are dedicated boxes that convert DV to analog and vice versa. There are also some monitors that do have a DV input port.
