Print to DV Tape - Skipping

Anyone know why my sound/video is skipping when I print to DV tape? It seems to happen randomly at some point in a 15 min. video for a 5-6 seconds. I tried Print to tape from a rendered avi file, and I also tried using the print to tape tool from the tools menu. It happens in both cases. Do I need a more powerful computer?

I've used print-to-tape successfully many times on an 800MHz P3. You probably don't need a more powerful computer. Most likely your problem is other processes running in the background. Shut down programs like virus/spyware scanners, instant messengers, email programs, etc. Any of these and many other programs can run at intervals and grab a lot of processor cycles, enough to interrupt the printing process.

I print to tape on an old 450 MHz PC (with Moviestudio).

Check the dropped frames FAQ at VASST. The cause of dropped frames and problems going the other way (print to tape) are similar.

Kelly's advice about background tasks is the best. You can click on Start, then Run, and type "MSCONFIG" to start a small program that lets you temporarily disable all sorts of background programs. Click on the Startup tab and disable everything. Reboot and then try to print to tape. You can run MSCONFIG again and re-enable all the processes, so when you re-boot, everything is back to the way it was (i.e., the process is completely reversible). The problem then will be to figure out which process is the culprit. Is you have anything that has the word "schedule" in it, that is a good candidate for permanent deletion.

Sonic Foundry has had this article in their Knowledge Base for quite some time and it has always been very helpful:

How to ensure successful DV Capture and Print to Tape.
